The bitter cold caused Liam to shiver violently. He had been walking around Christmas shopping for hours, and he felt like an ice cube. To add to his troubles, he was also lost, and carrying many shopping bags. “Now where did I park my car?” He mumbled to himself. Earlier that day Liam had been driving through the mountains of North Carolina, headed for Raleigh to meet some friends. It was out of luck that he found the pleasant little town he was currently stumbling through, with its bright main street filled with shops. He had planned on buying his friends presents once he got to the city, but he figured he might as well get it over with here. Now he couldn’t figure out where he had parked his car hours before, and had been wondering the empty streets looking for it. Just as he was ready to turn his car alarm on and disturb the peaceful silence, he saw a person lying in the road. “Hey! You there!” he called. “Are you okay?” Liam placed his bags on the ground a jogged towards the prostrate figure. He saw that the person was a girl, and a rather pretty one at that. She had light brown skin, long black hair, and an elegant face. Leaning over her he asked, “Are you all right?” The girl’s long eyelashes fluttered open, revealing large, dark eyes. She smiled.

“I’m all right now,” she purred. The strange girl grabbed his arm and hoisted herself up.

“Well you were just lying in the road. Like you were hurt or something… are you hurt?” Liam said, confused. The girl didn’t answer and only pulled him of the road, back to the sidewalk.

“I was just crossing the street and I must have passed out,” she said quickly. “I faint a lot.”  Liam didn’t know what to say to this. The girl continued. “ Thanks for helping me. If you hadn’t woken me up, I would probably get run over.” Liam blushed.

“It’s nothing. I’m sure anyone would have helped you,” he said. The odd girl was making him uncomfortable. Liam didn’t like the way she was looking at him. At closer inspection, he saw that her eyes were unnatural black color. So black, in fact, that it looked as if she only had two large pupils. She also seemed to be smiling too much for someone who had just been passed out on the road.

“Oh I don’t know about that,” said the girl. “People in this town are superstitious, they would have walked right past me. That’s how I know you’re from somewhere else.” Liam snorted.

“And what sort of mountain folktale warns against helping women who have fainted in the street?” The girl giggled slightly, and didn’t respond. After a few moments of silence, he spoke again. “Well I better find my car… do you need me to drive you home? I wouldn’t want you passing out again.”

“How chivalrous of you,” the girl said playfully. “Here, let me carry some of your bags.” She bent down, and to Liam’s surprise, picked up every single bag effortlessly. “You said that you had to find your car. I assume that means you are lost, correct?” Liam nodded sheepishly. “Do you remember where the place you parked it was like?”

“Yeah,” he said. “It was a big parking lot behind a BBQ place.” Her smile widened.

“I know where that is, let’s go, I’m cold.” She started walking in quick strides, Liam had to jog slightly to keep up with her.

“So,” Liam puffed. “You never did tell me what the people in this town have to be superstitious about.”

“Well,” the girl said. “They believe that spirits come out at night, evil spirits, workers of Satan. These spirits feed on human misery. They like to snatch children, kill livestock, spread disease, inspire hate, etc. But, these spirits will be burned to a crisp if they walk into the light of day. That’s why all the locals get their business done before nightfall, when it’s safe,” she said all of this without a trace of humor.   Then she swerved into an alley. Liam hesitated. “Come on, it’s a short cut!” Catching up with her, Liam asked.

“Well surely not everyone thinks that. People have to come out a night some time. Do you believe in all that?” The girl abruptly stopped at the end of the alleyway, there was a dead end. “I thought you said this was a short cut…” She didn’t respond. “Hey,” Liam reached out to touch her shoulder. She spun around with a devilish grin on her face. The girl moved in close towards his face, until they were almost touching.

“People have reason to believe what they do,” she whispered while running her lips down his neck. Liam didn’t draw away. “People disappear when they go out at night.” She backed him up against a wall and continued to kiss him.

“But why would they think it was some sort of evil demon? Couldn’t the disappearing people just have gotten lost, or kidnapped?” Liam murmured. He didn’t really want this girl kissing him, but he felt as if he could not move his feet.

“Once they found bodies,” she said. “It was very gruesome, they had to identify the people based on DNA. They were that mangled. The examiners couldn’t find anything that would indicate the use of a weapon. In fact the victims were literally ripped apart.” Her lips skimmed his throat. “There is no animal that would be able to do that, and a human certainly couldn’t do it. So the religious leaders blamed it on the servants of Satan. That seemed to satisfy people.” It disturbed Liam that she could talk about such grim topics while being so intimidate. The girl was kissing his lips now, as well as lightly biting them. Then she bit down hard, drawing blood.

“Ouch! What did you do that for?” Liam tried to push her away, but she slammed him hard against the wall. His head slung back into the wall, and his vision darkened.

“I’m so sorry,” she sighed into his ear. “But these damn people don’t ever come outside when I do. I haven’t has a good meal in such a very long time.” She leaned in and licked the blood from his busted lip. “Mhhhm. you’re delicious.” She bit down slowly into his neck. Liam let out an animalistic scream. “Hush now baby,” she gargled trough a mouth full of blood. With the hand she wasn’t using to hold him against the wall, she lightly wrapped her fingers around his trachea, and crushed it. He sputtered up blood and attempted to breath, all while the girl drained the life from him. Liam shuddered and went limp.
