Preface
Life can be surprising and painful. But sometimes surprises are painful. What if something you don’t expect happens? What if that something is a surprise? What if that something is painful?
That’s kinda what happened with my story. It was surprising. It was painful. And I sure didn’t expect it. Well I guess that’s how life goes. You know what they say: Always expect the unexpected.
1. NEW GIRL
“Leanne!” I heard my mother shout. “Breakfast is ready!”
I groaned before unwillingly getting out of bed. I yawned loudly, stretching my arms up in the air. While stretching I caught sight of the clock. 8.20. I was late...again.
I sprinted to the bathroom to brush my teeth and change my clothes. I ran back to brush my hair, put on some makeup and jewellery and my pink flats to match my pink knee-length full sleeved dress. Hmm…pink; a colour I could never disagree with. To my surprise I got ready in under a minute. I ran down to the kitchen.
In the kitchen, my mother stood in front of the stove, humming quietly to herself.
“Oh good, you’re here,” said my mom after realising I was downstairs. “Eat up.”
“Where’re Kevin and Daniel?” I asked.
“They’re long gone.”
“Why didn’t either of them wake me up?” I asked, slightly annoyed.
“They did honey. You told them you’ll be up in five minutes and fell asleep again. This everyday routine of you always being late has got to stop, Leanne.”
“I know, I know, tomorrow for sure, but I gotta go now.”
“What about breakfast?”
“Sorry mom, I got a warning from Principal Torry yesterday, if I’m late again he will kill me.” I grabbed my book bag. “Gotta go, love you. Bye.” And I was out the door before my mom could reply.
I arrived at school about ten minutes late which was normal, for me at least. There was no-one in the hallway. I went to my locker to get my books for class and then ran as fast as I could to History.
I opened the door to the classroom and everyone in class was staring at me. They didn’t look very surprised to see me late. I was late almost every day. I smiled nervously at the class and then my teacher, Miss Burn.
“Late again, Miss Johnson,” she said, pushing her glasses closer to her eyes.
I laughed awkwardly before going to my seat.
I sat to the left side of Miss Burn. She said I never seemed to work if I sat near to the back of the class so this was my permanent seat till the end of the year. I sat in front of my two best friends, Angela Goldman and Jane Clifford.
Angela was a very snobby person. She was extremely arrogant and had a very bad temper. Today she looked even crabbier than any other day before. Her curly blonde hair was brushed neatly to the side and her hazel eyes looked furious at me. I guess I kinda deserved that look. I’d been promising Angela since Monday that I’d come in early to finish our Geography project. Today was Friday and I definitely deserved the curses I could tell she was thinking towards me. I mouthed “I’m sorry” but she rolled her eyes.
Unlike Angie, Jane smiled when she saw me come in to the room. Jane was a very nice person. Not to brag, but she was just like me. She was very friendly and generous. She had short light brown hair and green eyes. She was quite short in height and she wore glasses. I have to admit, every now and then I would turn crabby and arrogant like Angela but Jane never did. Nice and friendly was who she was and that was never gonna change.
