"Lily?"
Of all the people who could have called me at five to two in the morning, my twice removed cousin Lily Meyer was most likely the least likely person to call me. Her voice blared down the phone line, filled with excitment or hysteria (I wasn't really sure).
"What?"
My voice was slurred with exhaustion and I couldn't even keep my eyes open.
"Aren't you even like listening to me?" She sounded distraught.
"Lily, Lily right? It's almost two in the morning."
"Oh my gosh! Didn't you like listen to me? I mean like! AHHH! Oh my gosh! This so exciting!" She squealed down the line.
"What? I didn't quite catch that."
"Oh Mendy! This is so great-"
"It's Wendy."
"Yeah, whatever. I've got tickets! Real freaking tickets! Guess who to see? Oh I can't wait for you to guess. This is too damn exciting! I've got two tickets for One Direction! I stayed up all night and I got them! We're going to see One Direction!"
She then squealed again and judging by the squeaking, she was jumping up and down on her bed.
"We? We are going to see what? Who?"
What the hell? When was this decided? Who are some direction? What?
There was dead silence down the line.
"Lily? Hello?"
"One. Direction. Freaking. One. Direction."
"Huh?"
"Aren't you mega excited?"
You say 'excited' way to much, I thought sourly.
"Please tell me who they are, Lily."
She actually screamed. No joke. A high pitched squeal of horror, high enough for dogs to hear. I winced and clutched the phone. Why hadn't I hung up already?
"How do you not know?" She asked, her voice a rasp.
"Well I've never heard of them."
"They are only like the best band ever, in the history of time. And there's five of them, they're like gorgeous, and there's Zayn, Harry, Niall, Liam, and christ, Louis."
"Is Louis your boyfriend?"
"YES! Well no, but he's mine. He's just beautiful. You can have any of them, except Louis, and oh Harry, you can't have him. He's my backup if Louis and I don't work out."
"Do you know them?"
"Yeah, totally! I read all about them!"
I flopped back down on my bed with a long sigh. It was dark in my room, except for the light from my little elephant night light in the corner. I wasn't afraid of the dark or anything, but I liked the night light so I kept it. The blinds were shut on my windows and I couldn't hear anything outside - what was there to hear in the middle of the countryside? Maybe owls...
"Um Mendy are you like there?"
"Wendy!"
"Yeah, whatever. So it's next Saturday." Squeal. "Pack some clothes, money, stuff like that, you need to meet me at-"
"Wait a moment. Who said I was going any where?"
Lily gasped.
"This is a chance you cannot miss! They might never come here again! You might not be able to afford a ticket, I bought it for you myself."
At that, I was offended. So what? I lived on a farm and we were struggling a bit with keeping the dairy herd - everyone else was, milk prices were dropping. Dad was busier than ever and he would never ask Mum for help. Neither would I.
"We're doing just find." I snapped.
"Oh don't get all haughty with me! I bought you a ticket to see the world's favourite band. You've got to love me for that."
I groaned and dragged my hands through my hair.
"I bet one of your friends would love to go with you."
She whined.
"Megan is in Egypt, I fell out with Rose, she's such a bitch, Amy and Sam are grounded, and Charlotte, well, we don't talk about her anymore."
"You must have other friends."
"Yeah, well they're not special to me-"
"And I'm special to you?"
"Of course you are! You're like my cousin!"
"I am your cousin."
She whined. Again.
"Can I go now?"
"Noooo! You got to promise to come to the concert with me."
"Go with your mum."
"She's away!"
"Go with your dad."
"What? No! He's like so embarrassing!"
I looked at my clock: quarter past two. I was exhausted and in no mood to continue conversing with my twice removed cousing.
"I need to go to bed."
"No! Promise me."
"Promise you what?"
"To go to the concert with me!"
I slapped my hand to my face. For God's sake, she had to have other friends, surely. But she whined and whined, and even cried a little when I refused for the tenth time.
"Fine! Fine! I'll go with you, this once. Give me the details around eight in the morning. I'll show up, okay?"
"Yay! This is going to be so much fun!"
"Yeah okay. What's the band we're seeing again?"
"One Direction!"
One Direction. Couldn't be that bad could it?
