I awoke screaming. The dream had terrified me, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was in danger. I quickly glance around my room. After seeing that I was safe and in no immediate danger, I calmed down.
The door opened and Adam walked in. His face was full of concern. He saw the tears streaming down my face and rushed over to my bed.
“Diana, are you okay?” he asked. When I didn’t answer, he got up and walked over to the rocking chair in the corner. He picked up the stuff rabbit that I had put in it, and walked back to me.
He handed me the rabbit, and I pressed it to my chest, burying my face in its fur. This rabbit was all I had left of the old mansion, the only thing besides Adam I was able to save. Holding it helped calm me even more.
“Diana, I need you to answer me,” he said, worry seeping its way into his voice, “I need to know what’s bothering you.”
“I had a nightmare, Adam,” I replied, and I told him about the dream, excluding the spirits. He didn’t need to know about that.
As I relayed the dream to him, he started to look more and more worried. When I reached the creature killing him, he stopped me. He seemed frightened of the dream, and he wasn’t even the one who had it.
“It’ll be okay,” he said, putting his arm around me. He pulled me in for a hug, and I didn’t resist. The gods only knew how much I needed it.
I stayed in the warmth of his hug for a few moments. It was comforting being in my brothers arms. I silently thanked the gods that Adam got out of that fire safely all those years ago. I wouldn’t know if I could handle not having any family left.
After I had finally calmed down, we let go of each other. Caron then entered the room. His face full of worry, just like Adam’s had been when he came to check on me. When he saw that Adam had beat him to me, he looked a little frustrated.
“It seems its true,” he said.
“What’s true?” I asked.
“That brothers are the most protective people in the world. I was gonna come comfort you myself. I thought I was making pretty good time,” he replied. He still sounded and looked frustrated, but now there was a hint of humor to it. He didn’t seem that upset anymore.
“I’ll go make breakfast. Caron, go wake your sister. Adam, Caroline will be here soon, go get dressed,” I said, and then I left the boys to do as they were told. I made my way to the kitchen, and started cooking.
Adam’s friend Caroline was coming over today, so I had to be especially careful about what I say. It wouldn’t be easy, seeing as I had to start planning Dean’s murder, but I would make it work.
As the smell of bacon filled the house, I heard a knock on the door. I yelled for Adam to answer it, thinking it was Caroline. I knew he had heard me when the sound of the door opening.
“It’s for you,” he said.
What? I wasn’t expecting anyone today. This was strange. No one ever came here unless they were invited. The only visitor I was expecting was Caroline.
