"Sam's the man! Sam's the man!" The cheering went on as I made my way to the stage during the assembly. As the head of theatre club I was going to make an announcement on our latest production. As my name was being chanted I felt special. Almost popular. Almost.
"Good morning Westwave High! Today I'm representing the Theatre club and I'll be talking about our latest production 'The West Side'. So auditions are gonna begin next week Wednesday at the auditorium at lunch with..." I kept scanning the audience while I was talking and I paused when I noticed a blonde boy sitting next to the famous Gale Tucker.
Although I didn't notice I had stopped talking until I caught a glimpse of Ms Cheva snapping her fingers at me. 'Oh, right' I thought. I tried to continue but I'd forgotten what I was supposed to say so I stood there frozen as the students began giggling amongst themselves. "So um I...uh. The uh..."
I tried to continue but my eyes were searching for the blonde boy. I couldn't see him clearly but from where I stood, he was gorgeous. My face became hot as the laughing and mumbling of the students became louder. I couldn't move but luckily Ms Cheva came up stage to rescue me.
"All right that will be all. If you want details come to my office later and there will be posters around the school." She motioned for me to go and sit down. I slowly turned and tears began forming in my eyes as everyone watched me struggling to my seat in the audience. Bex gave me a bewildered look. "What was that? You were talking nicely then all of a sudden you're acting like you saw a ghost."
I explained that I saw this other boy and she groaned in annoyance. "You're obsessed with boys Sam, honestly," she said. " Well he's not like anyone I've ever seen before. He's special, I'm telling you," I explained, my hand resting on my chin. She rolled her eyes. He must have been new and I had to get closer to him before any of these two- faced hoes did. My precious blonde boy. Mr. Perfect.
Later at lunch I hurried to the table Bex and Zoïe had saved. Zoïe smiled at me as I sat down. "So who's the guy?"she asked. I looked around the cafeteria. I froze when I saw him walking in with Gale Tucker and his group of friends. I felt my face getting hot, it was probably redder than Zoïe's hair at this point. He was more attractive up close, his ocean eyes could pierce into one's soul.
He was wearing a black hoodie, skinny jeans and white Nike's. They head over to an empty table and Wes must have told a really good joke cause they all started laughing. I loved their laughs; Gale's shoulders would violently shake up and down, Nate's hair jumping up and down as he vibrated and Wes doing the hokey pokey and his afro bopping up and down with him. But what fascinated me was the new guy's laugh. A soft giggle escaped his perfectly shaped lips and he moved around gently. I wondered if his laugh was always this gentle or the joke was just lame.
"So that's the guy? I mean I don't blame ya, he's gorgeous" Zoïe's voice poked in. I jumped. I'd forgotten they were even there. Bex was scarfing down her spaghetti like a good child while I was staring at boys. I blushed violently before going back to my food. He was perfect. I knew the popular girls would get to him soon, especially since he was already friends with Gale.
And speak of the devil, the cheerleaders came sashaying in. They went over to Gale's table and Monica hurried over to give Nate a kiss. "Hi cutie pie. You guys better win that game against the Eastwood Tigers next week or I'll never speak to you again." Nate smiled and grabbed her waist,"Don't worry babe we won't lose."
I became worried that these guys would influence new guy into playing rugby as well and he might get hurt. I was given something else to worry about when Monica spotted new guy. She squealed. "Omg who's this cute lil muffin? Nate introduce your friend."
He smiled nervously as Monica called the other cheerleaders around to admire him. "I'm Scott," he replied shyly. I nearly melted. "His name is Scott!" I almost shouted and Bex punched me. "Don't eavesdrop, Sam. If you wanted his name you should have gone to ask , now shut up." She said firmly. I obeyed but I couldn't help looking over at them again.
