“Back when I was a child

Before life removed all the innocence

My father would lift me high

And dance with my mother and me and then

Spin me around 'til i fell asleep

Then up the stairs he would carry me

And i knew for sure i was loved…”

Such a very nice song. This is an excerpt from the song “Dance with my Father” sung by Jessica Sanchez during her piece in the American Idol Season 12. This is a song dedicated to all fathers. We can put many interpretations in this song. And I for one, this song really got into me.

“Tatay” that’s what I call my father. His love story with my mother, he said before, was quite melodramatic. I could not really tell how their love story went about but I remember him telling me when I was at a very young age, the time he met my mother was when he was 21 years old. They have a four year age difference and my mother was older. He said they were board mates. My mother’s roommate and friend were being courted by my father’s friend and roommate too. He and my mother were just bridges between the two star struck lovers. Unluckily, their friends’ love did not prosper. Instead, what blossomed was affection with both of my father and mother and there came…ME.

“When I and my mother would disagree

To get my way, I would run from her to him

He'd make me laugh just to comfort me

Then finally make me do just what my mama said”

We were a one big happy family. I was raised in a simple but a modest household. With the love and care of my parents, I was raised really well. They have given me a good education and I feel really blessed. We encountered problems in the family as any usual family will have but we were able to solve it. But just like any other story, one comes across its limitations. My father has met another woman. As a man, he can’t resist temptations.  My mother was not happy about it at first.

“Sometimes I'd listen outside her door

And I'd hear how my mother cried for him

I pray for her even more than me”

To save the marriage, my father was forgiven. I, on the other hand, did not even bother to concern myself because I know my father loves us so much. And, I thought everything was great. Years passed, he hasn’t changed a bit. We have grown to ignore all his shortcomings. To top it all, he went away. We did not ask for reasons. We did not seek for answers as to why he left us. We don’t know where he is, what he’s been doing, or how he lives right this moment. But I do know one thing, after all what he did for us, he’s still the man my mother loves and he’s still my father. Nothing and nobody can’t change that.
