So this was a short story I started writing is 7th grade so I thought I would try to finish or work on it a bit. Sorry if things are misspelled or don't make sense this is only my secound story after all. Hope you like it, and I will take in a comments a suggestions into consideration as long as they are positive. Enjoy! Those tree words are the symbols of hope for many. To be able to go to school, to have a job, to have a life. At least that is what it used to mean before the crash. Then everything changed, people where running away from the borders instead of trying to cross them. The freedom was taken away from the people along with many lives. America fell in to a debt that could never be repaid.
"Wake up" "WAKE UP!" my sister yelled in to my ear as she was shaking my body.
When I opened my eyes orange light shined in through the window and my sister was in a panic.
"Are they here?" I asked as I changed out of my pajamas in to a dress.
My sister nodded and we started for the door.
"What about mom?" I said in a shaky voice. Mom is still at work, I hope she can make it to the boat in time. I picked up the emergency bag and opened the door.
"Mom will be okay," my sister said in a firm voice.
When we got to the docks our uncle was already waiting. My family worked out a plane incase this happened. We would all meet at my uncle's boat and go to the main land. We hopped in to the boat and kept our heads down in case any of the World where around. The World is a group of countries that the U.S.A is at war with. Since the war started most of the U.S. has become a battle ground. We knew sooner or later they would reach the islands (Hawaii).
"Your mom better get here soon!" my uncle said peaking over the rim of the boat.
"She will be she has too." my sister said in a hushed voice.
The sound of gun shots and bombs echoed in my ears for what seemed to be hours. The sounds where getting louder and louder, they are getting closer. I closed my eyes and covered my ears and waited, I waited for my mom to sit next to me and tell me everything was going to be okay. But that reassurance never came.
"If they get any closer we are going to have to leave", my uncle said in a hushed tone.
"NO! No we can't leave her" I said as a tear fell from my watering eyes.
My sister sat next to me and whispered "You know that is what she would want."
We waited for what seemed to be ten minutes, she did not come. The world is probably one or two blocks away. I did not want to admit it but I knew that we were going to have to leave her behind.
My uncle started to engine of the boat "sorry girls we have to leave."
The boat started to move forward just as the enemy reached the docks. They shot three bullets none of them hit me or my sister but one hit our uncle in the chest. My sister rushed up to him, she wanted to be a doctor so she knows a little about operations and stuff like that.
"Is he okay?" I said as I took the wheel of the boat.
My sister put two of her fingers on his neck and shook her head. "He's dead". She said as she looked up at me.
"No, check it again! He can't be dead! He can't! I yelled as I sat down on the passenger side of the boat.
My sister walked up to me gave me a hug and started steering the boat.
When I woke up we were sounded by water, with no land in site. My uncle told us that it could take up to four-2 days to get to the main land.
"Eat up," My sister said as she handed me a can soup.
The boat was filled with canned food, four sleeping bags, some matches and other things. As the day went on me and my sister would take turns steering the boat. You would not believe how quickly your arms fall asleep. Also navigating in the ocean with just one paper map and compass was not easy.
When the sun started to set we ate dinner and figured out the plan for the night.
"Okay I will take the first and third shift and you will take the second." "Even though you only have one shift it is just as long as the both of mine." My sister said as she laid out the two sleeping bags.
About three hours later my sister woke me up to start my shift. Steering a boat at night is not my favorite, everything is pitch black. It is also very peacefull, becuase for the time being I don't have to worry about being attacked. But as soon as I saw the twinkling of lights in the distance I knew that all of that would change.
