“At the time, my life just seemed too complete, and maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves.”
― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight ClubThe Photo. It had been the winter break of Sophomore year that it was taken. It had been their second anniversary, two whole years they had been together. She remembered vividly the day the photo was taken. She had awoken that morning to a heavy thumping on her window. Alarmed by the sound she had gotten up sleepily and gone to the window to see him standing below in the middle of her snow covered lawn, tossing snowballs at her window. His red 1987 convertible Mustang parked out in front of her house. His brown hair was a bit messy and swooped up to one side. The sight filled her with a warm feeling and a smile crept across her face. She had pushed the window open calling out to him, "What are you doing? Are you crazy? Its freezing outside!"
He had given her his smile, the one that always managed to tug at her heart strings. That lopsided grin of his that made her weak at the knees.
"Well then call me Crazy! Come on, I wont leave until you come on down here!"
She couldn't help it, she just couldn't stop smiling, she had yelled back,
"One moment Crazy! Let me get ready!"
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
That day he had taken her to the park, they walked hand in hand down the path. The whole park was covered in snow, a winter wonderland. The birds had been chirping and the sun was just starting to shine its warm bright light on the park. He led her down a small cobbelstone path to a little grove of trees; as they entered the grove she remembers the feeling of loosing her breath at the sight before her. it was beautiful, stunning. The trees surrounding the little grove had stings of white lights strung across the clearing from one tree's branches to another. In the middle of the clearing was a pond that had frozen over. She couldn't help it, it was beautiful. She was lucky she knew, she felt him squeeze her hand a bit and she looked over at him. She found her self gazing into his dark deep, beautiful, eyes.
They had the ice to themselves for about an hour before other people started to arrive to use the pond as a skate rink. That's when it was taken, the photo. A nice older couple had arrived and were sitting on a bench near the pond watching birds. She remembers him going over to ask them to take their picture, they had said they would love to. She remembers telling him she was embarrassed he had just smiled warmly back and held her in his arms and whispered in her ear, "Trust Me Salem, your perfect. You never need to be afraid because i will be here to protect you."
the next thing she knew she was smiling and laughing a bit and then the flash of the camera.
