CHAPTER ONE
____lim jaebeom's smile, among other beautiful atrocities
_______
> jackson wang was a man of simple pleasures. there were three things that he felt were absolutely necessary for his life to go on: pretty flowers, magic, and lim jaebeom's drop-dead gorgeous smile.
thankfully, jackson was blessed with all three of those things that particular autumn day. magic was a constant, obviously. it's hard to avoid magic when you're a witch. sometimes things float when you get stressed, or your bath water turns blood red when you're angry, or you just can't focus like the other kids in school 'cause you keep noticing the small, shiny things on the ground. and obviously there's the thing about crows following you. everywhere.
jackson loved witchcraft. he just wasn't very good at it. the exact words of his mother were this: "you're not awful, you're just not the normal amount of good". despite all this, he deemed magic a necessity nonetheless. because if jackson didn't have magic in his life, life wouldn't feel much like living.
the magic was the first thing to happen to jackson on that day. in fact, it was the first thing in every day. he woke up and there was a stone under his pillow. he ate breakfast with his two familiars. he stirred a spell into his morning coffee to bless his day. then he left for school and that was when the second thing happened.
as he was walking to school, he stumbled upon the most beautiful patch of magnolias. probably the last ones left before the weather got too cold and they died off. he gathered as many of them into his arms as he could, already thinking of all the people he could give them to. there was his three best friends; youngjae, mark, and hani. and he could give some to jooheon too! maybe, if he gathered the courage, he could give some to jaebeom and his friend jinyoung. he quickly muttered a spell onto the flowers to bless them with good luck.
jackson's mother always lectured him about being too obvious with his witchcraft. she was always telling him to take off his necklaces or to avoid hanging around outside with his friends (the crow thing) or to stop giving people flowers or rocks that he found. she especially hated when he would put spells on the presents he gave. in her mind, witchcraft was something to keep hidden. the idea that such amazing talents should be kept to oneself, to one's own family line and not shared with those unfortunate enough to not be born with such abilities, seemed absurd to jackson. if he had a gift, he would share it. of course, outright telling any human that he was a witch was forbidden. even jackson would not be bold enough to question that.
when he got to school, meeting up with youngjae, mark, and hani at mark's locker, they were less than surprised to see the bundle of flowers in his hand. mark sighed heavily when jackson handed him several flowers. "thanks jackson", he said exhaustedly. jackson knew that he wasn't ecstatic to have flower petals all over the bottom of his locker by the end of the day, but jackson knew he needed the good luck spell on them more than ever. he had a tough chemistry test that day that he'd been stressing over all week.
"i see you already gave some to jooheon", hani commented, wiggling her eyebrows. she had a thing about jooheon and jackson. ever since jackson had come out as bisexual, she'd been convinced that jooheon had a crush on jackson. even though jackson was very obviously head over heels for a certain captain-of-the-soccer-team, so-beautiful-that-you-could-die boy.
"yeah, he really liked them", jackson beamed. even hani's teasing couldn't ruin his day. "i gave some to tzuyu and nayeon too. and i was—sorry, i'll be right back!"
