The Story

Have you ever wondered why the sun rises in the day and the moon rises at night? Why they take turns appearing? Well, you see, the reason is not what you would think. Don't stop reading here, for this is not some scientific story. No, this, my friends, is an amazing love story.

Our story starts back a long time ago. The sun looked to the moon, and saw that she was dying. He felt himself burn with the desire to save her. She was beginning to become cold, she was beginning to turn pale. He wrapped his arms around her, telling her to hold on just a little bit longer, until he could find a way to save her.

He asked the stars, his friends, what he should do to save his love, help her to live. They looked at him brightly, "my friend, to save her you will have to give up some of your time to shine on the Earth. You have to die for just a while, in order for her to live."

The sun looked to the stars, hopefully, worriedly, because he could feel his love slipping further and further away, "anything. I will do anything." The stars nodded to him, "very well. Each night, you will die for her, and she will breath." You will fall as she rises. Yet, there is one part to this deal that you need to know."

He looked at them helplessly, "please, what is it that I must do to save my only love?"

"You will not be able to reach her. There will be once every six hundred and thirty-three days where you will be able to reach her again, but only for a moment," the stars answer him.

The sun looked down to his dying love and replied, "I accept your deal."

At that moment, he felt a force like gravity pulling them apart, the earth separating them. She rotated around the earth, but never close enough for him to reach. Still, he kept his deal. Each day he would die in order to let her live. And once, every year, they would meet, share a kiss and be parted again for another long, long time.

The time that the sun and moon are able to touch just once before parting again, that's what you and I would call a solar eclipse. It only lasts for a moment, but when it is seen, it is beautiful.
You see, they never stop chasing each other, they never stop hoping that maybe once, apart from the eclipse, they'd be able to touch. But they never can catch each other. The distance of sky between them is too great, but that never effects their love for each other.

This is the love story, my friends. The story of the love that the sun had for the moon, how he was willing to die in order for his love to live.
