Raising Steven

Steven's Birth, Rose's Sacrifice

Warning....you'll need tissues

In a small room, a large pink woman with luxurious curls lay on a bed. A human man and three other gem females stood near her.

The pink woman screamed in pain as she clenched tightly to the hand of her husband, Greg Universe.

"Is she supposed to be in this much distress?" The pale, anxious gem asked, moving back slightly.

"Yeah, is she like she's constipated." The small purple gem said loudly, trying to get a closer look.

"Amethyst!" Pearl scolded, pulling the smaller gem away. A taller gem wearing red stepped in.

"Calm down, both of you." She said sternly. "But Greg, is she supposed to be in this much distress?"

The young, slightly frazzled man nodded. "Well, yes...childbirth is extremely painful for a woman."

Rose Quartz squeezed her husband's hand tighter, knowing it was almost over...then she would be diminished to nothing.

"It...It's almost time, my gems." She cried out. "Once he is born, I will have only a few minutes before I have to go."

In ordering for the infant to survive, Rose would have to give up her physical form, thus transferring her gem to him so he would live.

Greg and the other gems knew this ahead of time. They knew that once that baby came into the world, Rose would only have a few minutes to say any last words to her dear family.

She gave one last cry of pain before the baby popped out. Rose, weak and feeble gestured for the gems to come closer.

Greg took the almost lifeless baby as tears flooded from his eyes. He hugged the frail newborn to his chest.

Garnet came first. She then split into two smaller gems, Ruby and Sapphire. Both were crying but were trying be strong.

Rose took each of their hands, Remember what I've told you...you can exist together as Garnet...I love both you as one and also apart."

Ruby and Sapphire both cried as Rose hugged them. They then fused to form Garnet, tears leaking from all three of her eyes.

"I am counting on you to lead the gems...they need someone strong and that is you, Garnet...take care of them."

Garnet wiped her eyes as she hugged the woman one last time. "Yes Rose, I promise we will..." She moved away as Amethyst stepped up.

"Amethyst, I have not known you long, but I sense great spunk and passion within you...you are special and you will always be one of a kind."

Amethyst was trying not to cry but was failing. She hugged Rose tight. "I'll miss you...thank you for accepting me...I'll always love you."

She moved back and let Pearl come close. Pearl was a mess. She couldn't hardly keep it together before tears pooled from her eyes.

"Oh Rose!" She sobbed, clinging to the weak, beautiful woman. "Oh Rose....how are we ever going to get along without you?"

Rose gently lifted Pearl's chin so she could meet her eyes. "I love you Pearl, you will be alright...I will always be with you in your heart...and in the baby."

Pearl sobbed harder. "I'll...I'll always remember how we fought side by side, and I'll never stop missing you."

She hugged Rose one last time before moving away. Greg came up, holding the baby who was barely holding on.

Rose took him in her arms, tears making their way down her pale cheeks. "Steven... even though I cannot be with you, I will always be with you in your gem."

She then turned to Greg, kissing him one last time. He hugged her back, crying. "I love you so much, honey."

Rose smiled weakly. "Take care of Steven...I know you will all raise him to be a strong and kind crystal gem just as I was."

The gems and Greg nodded, tears falling faster. "Of course...we love you and we'll never forget you, Rose."

With that, the vibrant woman placed her hand on the baby and murmered something. In a minute, she was gone.

A few rose petals lay in her place as the baby began to wail, the pink gem in his navel slightly glowing.

She was gone.

Greg picked up the infant and hugged him, still crying. "Steven...we're going to make sure you grow up to be just as kind and generous as your mother."

The baby stopped crying slightly and cuddled into the mourning man's embrace, warm and safe.

The gems were crying still, trying to pull it together for the baby that they all now needed to care for.

They crowded around the baby, still mourning the loss of their dear friend and leader. Pearl was taking it the hardest.

"Welcome to the world, Steven Quartz Universe...and good luck."
