Passing by his living room, Jayden noticed that his parents were sitting there with Isaac, making a list of things that the boys would need before returning to school.
Not wanting to tell his parents about Mira in front of his brother - who he knew would tease him over it - Jayden tried to sneak past the room and head straight towards the spare bedroom.
He was almost successful when a voice called him from behind.
"Hey Jay, where are you going? And what's with the pillow?" Isaac called out.
Cursing his luck, Jay turned around and walked over to his family, slouching down in an armchair. "Mira's in my room."
"Again?" Garrett, Hailey and Isaac, all exclaimed at the same time.
"You must have been dreaming, little brother," Isaac added. "She hasn't been to your room ever since you guys started going to Francesc's. In fact, she behaves like you don't even exist when we're at school."
"Because I'm a freak, okay?" Jay bursted abruptly. "She already had enough on her plate, what with her negligent mother and her parents' divorce. She didn't need to be constantly taunted by being friends with the guy who knows ballet! That's why she started avoiding me, because to the rest of the student body, except my two friends..... I'm just a weird guy. And she would have remained friends with me, if her life wasn't already a mess."
"Jay......knowing ballet is nothing to be ashamed off. You have a great skill, sweetheart. Don't let a bunch of ignorant teenagers make you feel bad about it," his mother said, affronted.
"Mom's right," Isaac said with a slight frown on his face. "You have a gift. And if Mirabelle Watson avoids you for this.........she doesn't deserve your friendship in the first place."
Jayden smiled at that. No matter how much they argued, Jay could always count on his older brother to defend him.
"What are we going to do now?" Hailey asked after a while.
Jay looked over at his father and shrugged. "If you give her a few more minutes, you could carry her over, like before, without her waking up."
"Jay......I know Mira's not always good to you at school, but son, she's gonna need you a lot, specially with everything that's going on. Just be there for her in any way you can, yea?" Garrett asked, biting his lips.
"I know, Dad, I know," Jay sighed. "Even today, something happened that caused her to yell at her mother and apparently she also made Ara cry in the process. You didn't see her today, she wasn't just crying over her mom ignoring her........she seemed so broken."
Jay looked down, his heart breaking a little for the girl he had known since birth.
"You're a good kid, Jayden Greene," his mother smiled at him.
"Being a little partial towards one kid, Mother," Isaac teased, trying to lighten the mood.
"Oh please," Jayden scoffed, playing along. "You get credit even when you don't deserve it."
"Boys," Hailey said in a warning tone, rolling her eyes. She knew they were trying to change the topic and she couldn't be prouder of her sons for the way they handled every tough situation thrown at them. They were good boys and she hoped they'd grow up to be fine men.
After about 10 minutes, Hailey and Garrett walked up the stairs to Jay's room and slowly opened the door, turning on the lights. Mira was sleeping soundly on his bed, traces of tears still evident on her face.
Hailey and Garrett shared a look, their eyes watering at the sight of the young girl who must be feeling completely lost right now.
"Maybe we should leave her be. She looks so peaceful," Garrett whispered.
"Mike will have a stroke. It'll make the situation much worse," Hailey retorted, although she agreed with her husband - Mira hadn't looked this peaceful in a long while.
Shaking his head, Garrett picked up the teenager in his arms, careful not to wake her up and left Jay's room.
Hailey was right, Mike would have a stroke if they didn't bring Mira back to her home.
