"I didn't feel as though I was in control of my life."

Annie was 8 when both of her parents were put in jail. She was then sent to live with relatives. It was soon decided that she would go to live in a foster home.

After living with her foster home for a while, she moved to a more permanent foster home. There she didn't really enjoy it there because the decisions that her foster parents made for her "didn't feel like the right thing for me but at that time I didn't know that I had the right to challenge them."

She says that she didn't feel like she was in control and she found her situation confusing, for she was constantly being told by adults that she had to do things that she didn't want to do.

She finally made contact with the NSPCC. She was joyous to find that Tessa* still worked there. Annie had met Tessa a few years ago when she was dealing with her parents in jail and moving to a foster home. "Tessa talked to me about children's rights and and helped me to understand that children have rights too. She explained that I was entitled to have a say in what was happening to me in terms of my care order and where I wanted to live."
