There was a quietness surrounding them as Asta looked out at the empty fields in front of him. The female had Titan had run off and they were just sitting here doing nothing and being useless.

Jean was next to him, using his fingers to let out loud whistles for his horse to come back.

"Where'd they get this? How old's your gear?" Asta heard Reiner say behind him. He and Armin were sitting down and Reiner was dressing Armin's wounds.

"Don't worry about it. It came off like it's supposed to, so it didn't break. Should still be in decent shape." Armin responded.

"All right. That's something, then. Still down another horse though. Not an ideal situation." Reiner began to wrap the bandage around Armin's head. "We can't get movin' again until Jean's ride shows up. "

There had only been enough wrap for one person so Asta insisted it go to Armin. He could deal with his wounds not being wrapped for a little bit. Armin needed it more then he did.

"We can't afford to stay out in the open like this." Asta said. There might not be any Titans around now but that could change at any notice.

"If worse comes to worse, one of us'll have to get left behind. What are we supposed to do? Draw straws? Armin's hurt. Reiner's too big to ride with safely. Maybe I should just take my chances horse retrieving on foot." Jean mumbled.

Asta looked at him out of the corner of his eye.

"How messed up is that we might even have to consider that? Out of the frying pan, into the fire. It's what we get for narrowly escaping death." Jean brought his fingers to his mouth to whistle again.

"Stop." Asta said firmly. "You're only freaking yourself out more."

"No, I'm thinking about the reality." Jean said, turning his head to look at him.

Asta pursed his lips and looked away from him. "No one gets left behind." Was all he said. Jean shook his head and looked away from him.

"Armin? You with me?" Reiner asked and Armin gasped. "I guess your head's still a little shaken up, huh?"

"Um. I might still be a little foggy, yeah."

Reiner stood up. "It's okay. The choice isn't gonna be any easier with you thinkin' clearly. Two of us is gonna have to stay here. We need to figure out who."

Jean and Asta turned to face them with blank expressions.

"Wait a sec! I mean shouldn't we at least fire who a smoke signal first? If everyone kept going straight, Row Four, Squad three ought to be in close proximity to us by now."

At Armin's request, Jean did exactly that and fired a black smoke flare into the air. "Well, it's the emergency signal, but who knows? I doubt anyone's gonna see it and think, 'hey, somebody must need an extra horse.''
