"I can feel the cold lifeless hands of death clutching my worn body." I exclaimed tiredly.
"Doug you're being dramatic, eat your damn breakfast." My older sister Martha scoffed flipping her blond hair while scrolling on her phone.
"You're not even eating this sludge," I say under my breath and gulp down a few bites of the bitter food. "What is this even supposed to be?"
Martha withdrew her brown dirty boots from the table and started putting them on.
"Don't be so ungrateful, since mom's out I had to make it," She replied eating a large scoop of her food. "It's nutritious so shut up." I gave a small exasperated sigh and forced another bite down my throat, as if I would tell her that her key chain bear was loosened. I knew arguing with her was impossible so I kept my mouth shut and let karma have her way. Besides today was yet again another day of school. I dreaded the thought as I walked over and placed my plate in the dirty sink.
"You should really do the dishes sometime." I said quietly as I stared at a small cockroach run across a filthy bowl forcing me to jump a little at the sight.
Martha huffed and glared at me. "Are you saying that since im a girl, Douglas?"
"N-no," I stuttered clutching my black canvas backpack, "it's because it's your turn, I always do them."
Martha stood up with a loud clatter of books to the floor "ah shit, fix your hair before the bus gets here." She leaned down to place her things back into her pink bag. "I'm meeting up with Laura today don't bother waiting up."
I shivered, not her. I forced the memory out of my head and walked out of the front door. The sun blinded me for a second with a harsh glare. I need to go out more I thought to myself as I sat at the curb fiddling with my laces for my shoes.
You remember what happened, don't you Douglas?
I jumped, "not this again." I placed my hands in my black hair, I felt comfortable when I curled into a ball like this.
"You look like a big baby." The voice was Martha she had fixed her worn down skirt and patted me on the back. The pat wasn't harsh but it didn't make me feel any better. I unclutched my hair and peered up at her.
"And you look like a bum." I stated tugging at a string that was hanging low on her green skirt. Taking out my lighter I singed the thread until it was gone. "You're welcome." With that the large yellow bus screeched to a halt in front of the two and the large door opened with a bang.
"Hey kids, it's another week." The bus driver stated with a smile that was only met with groans from the two kids. Martha pushed past me and hurried to her friend in the back of the bus. It was loud again the sounds ringing in my head as I searched the sea of kids for a familiar face. Looking closely the glimpse of neon green hair peaked over the seat and immediately started for them. Plopping down onto the leather seat it jostled the poor boy awake. The neon haired boy looked frightened until he had a better look of my face.
"Douglas!" He smiled happily as he rubbed his tired eyes. "What's up man?" I chuckled at the sight of him. He seemed better now. I had taken a small moment to peer around the bus to find a specific person. I turned back to him defeated.
"Nothing much, but hey Beck?" I then lowered my voice "have you seen Danny? I thought he was a star student so why isn't he on the bus today?"
Beck then pulled his yellow hood on and stated tiredly "I tried to call him but his phone went straight to voicemail." He then curled up at the cold window and was out like a light. Jesus I thought, how could anyone sleep curled up to that.
