The light shone on my face as I woke up and squinted at my phone. It was 8 o'clock. It had just struck me, today is 19th January.....today was the day me and the girls would get our acceptance letter from the University Of Southern California. It had been a horrifyingly long wait, but it was about to come to an end.

I brushed my teeth way too fast in anticipation, and when I gargled, I saw blood. I freaked for a while, but then I realized there was my acceptance letter waiting for me and this was, in comparison, slightly unimportant.

I scrambled down the stairs as I internally debated whether or not I should have breakfast first, but I decided that the letter was crucial to my future, and hence the entire day. So I go outside and cross the lawn to the mailbox, fumbling inside for the letter. I finally found it, the crisp off-white envelope addressed to the one and only, me.

Just then, the sprinklers come on, and I run inside, shielding the letter under my plaid shirt, guarding it with my life.

What luck.

At the breakfast table, I hurriedly open the letter, and skim its contents.

Wait. That can't be right. What did I just read?

I read it again, slower this time. And somewhere along the lines I saw the word 'rejected'.

I look up at my mom, and she looks at me, a concerned look on her features. Only then do I realize I was teary-eyed all this time.

I'll admit I genuinely thought I would get in with no problems. What a horrid day this was going to be.....

I wonder how the other girls are dealing with this.

I opened my eyes to the bright morning light and thought to myself, "Oh boy, good luck to you, Hajar."

The possibility of my getting into a university as prestigious as The University of Southern California was nil. Or close to nil.

I go down and open my letter anyway, keeping my head low and my hopes lower. I read between the lines and OH MY GOD I GOT IN. WHAT IS THIS SORCERY? IS THIS BLACK MAGIC? BLUE MAGIC? OH MY GOD.
