JOHN RICHARD DEACONAugust 17th, 1979- On the way to Munich, Germany.
Another album.
The eighth to be more exact, after recording Jazz at Montreux was relatively difficult for Freddie, we were going back to what we call the preseason for recording our next album. Like recording Jazz, the tour was even more difficult, we returned to the stage a year exactly after the tragedy, that terrible day that would soon be two years old.
Things have never been the same.
We were all going to Munich, we had just finished the Jazz Tour with the shows in Japan recently and Freddie was trying to keep himself constantly busy, which meant we were working harder than usual.
He was different. The behavior had completely changed, he started smoking -
"Michael!" I screamed as my one-and-a-half-year-old son threw Brian's scrabble pieces all over the place.
Robert was sulking next to Ronnie while Jimmy joined Michael's mess. My God, when did we have so many children on board an airplane? Laura was still small and was in London with my in-laws and still had Dom and Roger's first child on the way ... how things have changed in almost two years.
"Jimmy!" Brian took the boy and handed him to Chrrisie who was laughing with Veronica and Dominique.
"And that is the price of having all these little angels in our lives." Freddie commented amused by exhaling his cigarette smoke.
"John can you remind Freddie that I'm still not talking to him?" Roger came out of his trance, he had been for a good twenty minutes watching Dominique's still flat stomach waiting for it to grow.
"Why did you come back to this stupid subject?" I asked confused and Ronnie rolled her eyes beside me.
"I swear the baby isn't born yet." Dominique spoke and Freddie sat down next to Robert and stubbed out his cigarette.
"John can you tell Roger that I had nothing to do with that stupid pair of maracas if not throw them in the audience?" Freddie smiled at Robert who seemed to have no idea about him.
"It took me hours to stole that pair of maracas! It was my favorite! And what did he do? He throws in the audience!" Roger's hoarse voice wailing reminded me of Robert making fun of me.
"For fuck sake! Can you two stop?" I asked and Veronica looked at me crookedly.
"Daddy! You just said the bad word that Uncle Freddie likes!" Robert seemed to wake up from his bad mood.
Oh shit I'm going to sleep on the couch today!
"John ... you need to stop this." Ronnie complained while Jimmy and Michael looked at us curiously.
"I know, I'm sorry! Don't repeat that word, children!" I said rolling my eyes while Freddie laughed.
"Uncle Fred and John, I hope Jimmy will not learning any of this bad words." Brian spoke after saving the Scrabble board.
Freddie winked at him and ruffled Robert's hair who laughed at him. It was an atypical day to tell the truth. Freddie was rarely in a good mood, he was like that when the kids were around.
The concert at Saarbrucken Open Air '79, fell as the perfect excuse to finally get to know the place where Julia was working, Musicland Studios in Munich.
Ronnie was excited, she hoped that their reunion would be good for both of them.
"What is the name of the studio we are going to visit after the show?" Freddie seemed to be reading my thoughts, but he had no idea where Julia was, she forbade me, Elton, Roger and Brian to tell Freddie anything about her life, but after many conversations, Elton thought we should break that secret.
