Chapter 1: Bad Boy's Girl
It's Monday morning. My alarm went off so I had to get up and get dressed. I put on some clothes, I did my makeup, wore my heals and head off to work as usual.
My boss doesn't think of me as a good lawyer but he's never given me a chance to prove him wrong.
Today he gave me a case about a guy who wants to plead guilty of killing his parents. The case seemed easy for me, my boss gave it to me so we would get it over with.
But, something just seemed so wrong about this case. I mean a 18 year old guy killing his parents? It sounds to cruel but people are animals so I didn't think much of it.
I went to talk to the guy. He didn't speak, at all. I asked him everything. I asked if he did do it, if he did why did he do it, if they were abusive, if something similar had happened in the past all these things. Nothing. He didn't say a single word.
I showed him the paper he had to sign to plead guilty he immediately grabbed the pen out of my hand and signed. Something was wrong. I could feel it. I talked to my boss about it and she told me to let it go that it was nothing. She told me to give the paper to the judge so we could get it over with.
I couldn't do it. I went by his house, where his older sister and aunt were living. I asked them the same questions. They both said he couldn't have done it. When I asked them what makes them think he didn't they simply replied with "because he loved them" and that's when I realized he never could. How cruel could an 18 year old boy be to do such thing? I mean think about it.
I told my boss. She got angry. She told me I shouldn't have gone there and ask these questions. She told me that if I don't forget about this she'd fire me. I nodded and walked away. I didn't know what to think.
I called my dad who was also a lawyer and told him everything. He agreed with my boss, he told me to let it go. But, I couldn't I just knew there was more to the story.
One week has passed
I went to see the guy again. I looked him in the eyes and said "tell me the truth. What happened that night?" He looked back up at me. He had these blue eyes like the ocean and his hair were black with white edges, his jawline and eyebrows were on point when I tell you he was perfectly made.
Anyway... He looked at me and he only said five specific words "they made me do it." This made me question everything. I asked him who did and why they did it and why would he want to plead guilty to a crime he didn't commit. It just didn't make sense. I was about to leave when...
"Wait- I'll tell you what happened that night."
I turned around slowly, I sit down, took out my notebook and opened my ears. I was so ready to hear it. This case had been killing me for the past weeks. He started talking.
"My parents always had problems. They fought all the time. My mum wanted a divorce but then my dad got even more aggressive towards her. That night they fought as usual but something was wrong. This fight was way worse than the others. I came down from my room and I hid down the stairs. I heard my dad...he- he picked up a knife a- and he killed my mum but when he realized what he had done, it was too late. I got angry. Very angry I went towards him and started yelling at him. He looked at me and said "do it." With a calm voice. "Do what?" I replied. "Kill me" he said. I froze. "I- I can't" I said. He grabbed me by my shirt gave me a knife and screamed as loud as ever to kill him. And so I did. What I hadn't realized was that he had called the police before I killed him and told them I killed my mum. You're probably wondering how I didn't hear him call. He called the moment he killed her, the moment I couldn't move or speak I didn't hear anything I felt like I had passed out, but I hadn't. The police came in and saw me holding the knife above my parent's dead bodies. They assumed I did it. And here I am. Confessing to their murders."
I didn't know what to say. It must've been awful for him to feel that way for so long. I couldn't even imagine his place. I told him we should go to court and have a trial.
He laughed.
"Look at me" I said.
He looked.
"We're going to have a trial and you are not going to plead guilty."
"Why?"
"Because you didn't do it."
"But I-"
"You didn't do it. You hear me?"
He nodded.
"Good. I'll tell my boss that you changed your mind. I'll be back." I said and I left.
I still couldn't stand the thought of him having to go through that. Poor guy.
I went to the office and told my boss. She was angrier than ever.
"I told you he was going to plead guilty and we would get over with this!" She yelled.
"He changed his mind. I couldn't do anything." I responded.
She raised her eyebrow, looked me up and down. And said "I believe you. Fine but mark my words. When you lose you're fired."
I nodded and walked away.
