Dark, that was all it was around me, well almost. I walked on this...dark, dirt road, I am alone, there’s no one and nothing around, just the road and me. There’s nothing around, there’s just the dirt road and a grassy hill on the right side on me, wait right? No, was it the left side? I don’t know! In fact, I don’t even know what day it is, being in the dark with no rising sun can do something to a person.
I am alone on this dirt road, the road only goes one direction: straight. I am the only person who’s here, there are no signs of life out here that I can see, there’s only dirt in front of me and behind me, nothing else besides the one hill on either side of me.
I don’t know how I got here or why I’m here for that matter, in fact, I barely remember anything at all. I must've been hit hard on the head for me to lose my memory, but the only things I remember was waking up on this….empty dirt road and walking for minutes or hours.
I had walked for hours or God knows for how long, trying to find my way back to my home. But...nothing, what I mean by that? I mean I found nothing: no people walking around, no houses here or in the distance, no nothing like a forest or whatnot other than the road.
I started to sweat, I began to feel dread as being alone for so long can do something to someone, I took off in a run hoping and praying to find something or
,
Anything that would give me some comfort in this dark situation, but after a few minutes or rather hours of running, nothing just the road!
My energy started to run thin, I couldn’t run anymore, I slowed down till I came to a stop completely. My lungs felt ready to explode since I was running so much, my sides were cramping and my throat burned in pain since it had become very dry. When I stopped, I finally collapsed on the ground, panting heavily.
How many minutes had gone by? Two? Four or six? I don’t even know! Having no sun or any device that is able to tell time makes it difficult to know what time it is, although if I had to make a guess at what time it is: I would say it was midnight depending on how dark on it was outside and I believe about a few minutes have gone by though I don’t know that for sure yet.
Concerning the sun or lack thereof as I was repeating before, there is no sun in this place. Actually, there is no light that I know of: no sun, no moon, not even any stars! It’s just me, the darkness, the hills and the...road. Yet for some damn reason, I can still see the road and the hills but I’m not doing it. There is a small ball of light surrounding me, providing me with light but not much so I might have lied about not having light, sorry.
Once again, I looked around again but still I didn’t see anyone or anything but the road once again. I swallowed hard, sweat started to form on my forehead, anxiety started to build up in my gut as I now fully realized my situation, but still I attempted to find my way out like the stubborn human I was. I walked forward for a few minutes or whatever but nothing, I tried backtracking to see if anything would change, but nothing.
I attempted to walk to the left and the right to see if there was a way out but it was exactly like the road, it never changed and the only place I ended up at was the road. That when a terrible realization, there was no way out of this road and this place. I fell on the ground, grabbing my head and taking a few deep breaths to try and calm myself, but really it seemed so pointless right now considering the situation. I wiped sweat off my brow with the back of my left hand, I stroked my chin with my fingers, trying to find some way to get out of here but really, I’m stumped as hell.
No ideas came to my mind, my head hurt from a headache and whatever hit me, I couldn’t think properly. My mouth opened and I...yawned, I felt really tired from all the running I did, I knew I had to rest which in hindsight sounded like a stupid move given the situation but I didn’t have a real choice here, I have to keep my energy up.I had been sleeping peacefully for probably the past few minutes and for some unknown reason I wake up. Of course I was still tired while rubbing my eyes and yawning, I sat up and looked around but as usual, I didn’t see anyone or anything though it might’ve been how dark it was outside or because I was still tired.
As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, my eardrums twitched as I thought I….heard something coming from behind me. I was still slightly half-asleep while I was adjusting to my surroundings so at first, I brushed it off as nothing….that is until I heard the sound again.
I jumped as I was now fully awake right now, I stood my feet and started frantically looking around, trying to figure out where the hell the sounds were coming from, but once again, I saw nothing but the darkness, the lone empty grassy hills and of course, the road. I blink, rub my eyes then blink again to make sure I was seeing correctly, everything was the same the first time I walked down the road.
What’s going on? I asked myself, scratching my head in confusion, wincing in pain from the wound in my head. I thought I was alone after all, I didn’t see anyone or anything in this place, was there someone else here with me? I stayed put for well, God knows how long, waiting for another sound to be sure I wasn’t hearing things.
It was about two very long minutes before something happened and it happened like the last time, a sound came from right behind me broke the long silence that had fallen over me, a noise that appeared to sound like a foot hitting the dirt right behind me.
At this point, I knew I wasn’t hearing things, this was real, someone was here with me. My heart started to race, I began to feel excited like a little kid in a candy store, finally someone was coming to rescue me! Finally I would get some answers! I opened my mouth as wide as I could and filled my lungs with enough air to scream out for help…
When something stopped me, I didn’t know what it was at first but after a while of thinking, I now believe it was my gut instinct. My jaw shut, my breath slowed and I was now quiet, listening hard to my surroundings but it was now completely silent and still, now I was freaked out but I tried to keep myself calm.
But it was at this time, I was now thinking deep in my mind, how could there be another person here? There were no other people and no houses around this place but the road, and in the last few minutes of walking around in this place, I didn’t see anyone around here, it was just the road. So this begged the question: how could there be another person in this place?!?
My thoughts were interrupted by another footstep or footsteps from behind me, I jumped backwards a few feet, kicking up a layer of dirt in the process, my heart rate sped up intensely and my breathing became quicker, I thought I was going to have a heart attack from the sudden fear that came into my gut.
The feeling of dread inside me only grew more intensely, something I hadn’t felt in a long time began to grow in my guts. I took a step backward as the footsteps came closer. Something told me to run, something told me that whatever was coming wasn’t human and I needed to avoid them at all cost.
A low noise broke the silence, a low growling came right into my hearing, a sound that was a confirmation that this thing wasn’t human. The prey animal inside me kicked into full gear, I turned around and began to run as fast as I could, my feet pounded the ground which kicked up the dirt in the process. Behind me, the sound of footsteps echoed loudly as soon as I set one of my feet down. My heart was now thundering in my chest like thunder in a wild storm, sweat had now formed on my head and rolled down my cheeks, I felt nothing but pure fear.
Running for my life and remembering how slow I am isn’t as fun as it sounds on paper, but I did not stop running at all, I needed to run, I needed to get away. I studied the road in front of me, trying to find a way out, but I didn’t find anything at the moment. After a few seconds, I spotted a warm bright light just a few miles away, quickly I charged toward it, panting heavily like I was in a race.
Each step I took brought hope more and more strongly, finally I was going to get out of this nightmare! I didn’t or rather couldn’t feel relieved just yet, the thing behind me was catching up. The light grew brighter with passing second and a smile grew onto my face, finally home! Sweet home! I was finally going to be safe back in my home, wherever I lived in the real world.
However in an instant, the light faded and my happiness changed to horror as the road suddenly ended. Immediately, I skidded my feet upwards to stop myself, the dirt being split in two piles from my effort to stop, air was getting itself caught in my lungs, my lungs themselves felt ready to explode since I was holding my breath but I didn’t care and it didn’t really matter cuz’ at the last second, I tripped.
I let out a scream as I tumbled down the hill, every part of my body getting hit by a rock on the hill, I tried my hardest to stop myself by grabbing on to some sort of object but it was no use, everything I tried to grab just sent me flying in a different direction.
Out of the blue, I hit something hard with my head as I neared the ground, I fell unconscious instantly the minute I hit the dirt ground. When I came to, it was dark, that’s all it was around me. I walk on this...dirt road, I am alone, there’s no one and nothing around, just the road….and me.
