CAMERON MICHAEL THOMPSON, GET DOWN HERE RIGHT NOW
Crap what did I do now? I think to myself as I run down the stairs, as fast as humanly possible, to meet my raging mother. She stands in the kitchen hand on her hip other hand on a piece of paper. I dont even have to ask what it is because I knew this was coming. I just didnt think it would happen so fast.
"Yes mom?", I say hoping to look innocent.
"YES MOM?", I flinch at her loud voice. For a 52 woman she sure can make any man cower when shes mad. "WHY DID I GET LETTER SAYING THE SCHOOL NEEDS MY NEW CONTACT INFORMATION AND WOULD LIKE TO INFORM OF LATEST FIGHT?!?!"
"Oh that. Well... you see I have a perfectly good reason for that.", I try and reason.
"Oh, lets do hear it. Whats your great reason this time?" she makes that face all moms make when they know your about to spill the biggest line of bullshit you can imagine.
"I have decided I want to change my future career. You see, I want to be a boxer now, and I was simply practicing on someone who decided that their future career was to be a dumbass. Honestly, I was doing it for the good of society." I say in a rush then hold my breathe in anticipation for my punishment. To my complete surprise she puts her head in her hands and starts shaking. I cant tell if shes laughing or crying. "Mom?" I say with worry lacing my voice. She looked up at me tears streaking down her face and a smile lingering on her lips. She shakes her head and says, "Youre just like your father, Ill let him decide what to do with you." With that she turns and starts preparing supper. I turn and start head back upstairs but pause on family picture hanging on the wall. It was taken not long after Maisie got brought home from the hospital. I take a deep breath then keep moving up the stairs towards my room. As soon as I reach my room and pull out my phone, I seen its been blown up by none other than Eddie. I scroll through about 40 messages asking why I havent answered her 37 phone calls before her face pops up on my screen once more. I take a deep breath and slide me over the answer button.
"CAM HAVE YOU LOST YOUR DAMN MIND?! WHY HAVENT YOU BEEN ANSWERING MY CALLS? DID YOU GET EXPELLED? MURDERED? WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED? I CAN HEAR YOU BREATHING WHY ARENT YOU SPEAKING? I NEED ANSWERS NOW!"
"Are you done? Can I tell you what happened now? Youre worse than my mother." I say pinching the bridge of my nose.
"yes of course sorry Ive just been so wo- not important spill."
"Look I decided I wanted to be a boxer an-"
CUT THE BULLSHIT. YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO BOX. I WANT THE TRUTH NOW"
I sigh I should have known that she would be able to see right through that.
"Okay, okay. Ill tell you what happened. I was talking to Jake and Brad, and we were walking down the hallway minding our own business when I heard douche nozzle Anderson start running his mouth about all of the things he did to you after your date, and Chelsea right after you. The things he said about you Eddie I couldnt just let him get away with it." I run my fingers through my hair in frustration at the memory.
"Aww, Cam my knight and shinning DUMBASS! HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MIND? You know damn well I can take care of myself and Im not anywhere near as slutty as Chelsea. Absolutely nothing happened besides me nearly breaking his hand." Hmm now that I think about it, he didnt swing as many punches as he normally does. I just thought I was that good of a fighter.
"I know you can take care of yourself I just what kind of a friend would I be if I didnt have your back?"
"Oh no dont think youre getting off that easy. You could have ruined your chance at scholarships, hell at college period. I love you, and love that you have my back, but I am not letting you risk your future on some jackass I can handle myself."
"Fine, Im sorry for defending your honor and getting myself serval ass chewings today. Oh, and I love you too, bye." I hang up the phone after that and fall back on my bed thinking of a story, Im going to tell dad that wont have me grounded for the next eternity. The truth of course is not an option. I could never embarrass Eddie like that. Our parents have been friends forever, and there is no way her parents drop this without a lawsuit and the whole school knowing. I am not about to throw her under the bus to save my own ass.
"Cameron, suppers ready come on down and set the table." I slowly get up ready for the death sentence Im walking into. I make my way into the kitchen and start to set the table. Just as I finish setting the table, I see my father walk in. He walks up to mom and kisses her cheek and says, Smells lovely as always dear. He put his work things up then comes back to sit at the table. Mom puts the food on the table right about the time he asks me how school is, and I know I can only deflect the subject for so long. "Its great dad my grades are still all As and we won state at the football game last week." We start eating and all thoughts of school are lost until my mother decides she hates me. "Cameron, why dont you tell your father what you told me earlier."
My stomach drops I feel the panic set in as I place my fork down and take and unnoticeable deep breath. "well you see, I sort of umm I said that I changed my career choice to boxer and was practicing on a person who chose to be a dumbass." I let my breath out and look down at my plate avoiding eye contact at all costs.
"Oh, is that right? What was the schools punishment this time?"
Still looking down at my plate I get a small shimmer of hope. I look up and reply, "Nothing, this happened off campus after school hours." Maybe I can get out of this after all.
"How convenient, you didnt get this one on your record." He shakes his head and runs his fingers through his hair in frustration. "How hard is it Cameron for you to not assault people off the field?", he sighs You know I think Ive figured out your punishment this time. "Since you wish to be a smart ass and are very interest in a career change, Ive decided youre going to take boxing classes everyday after school until I deem otherwise."
I sit there starring at him shook to my core. "well it's a good thing I don't have football anymore."
"See perfect and it keeps you in shape during your off season"
I get up taking my punishment as is knowing it could be a lot worse than it is. Running back upstairs, I do homework and get ready to crash.
I wake up the next morning around 9 to the smell of breakfast downstairs. Sighing and rubbing my eyes and thanking God its Saturday. Rolling out of bed, going straight to the shower, I hop in and enjoy the hot water on my back. Noticing the hot water is running out, I finish up and step out. Grabbing a towel, I dry off and get dressed. I hear a buzzing sound and reach for my phone.
Dude lets go to this party on the hill later. Zoey and Maddie will be there 😉. Its a text in the group chat of me, Eddie, Brad, and Jake. Eddie responds first Hell yeah Im always down for a party even if sluts are there. I laugh at her response she really knows how to have a good time, might as well go. Putting my phone back in my pockets, I run down stairs and relax for the rest of the day, until the party tonight.
