CHAPTER THREE — ❛ PLEASE, LET ME WONDER ABOUT TOMORROW ❜

The deeper you dig in Navi's head, the darker it gets. Reality is warped beyond recognition, tragedy is seen as a work of art and human emotions are impossible to understand.

The two of us bonded slowly, despite being sisters and I spent my life trying to reach her, truly reach her, but there has always been this infinite gap between us. We were separate planets, each flying in her own orbit, entire universes away from one another.

It would be easy to hate her for being this way, but she can't really help herself. She was born this way, with unfixable faults in her code, thoughts that move too fast and a heart that feels too little.

I spent my adolescence going from one foster home to another and always looking over my shoulder. A tragedy sent us separate ways and I hadn't seen Navi in years, but I never stopped waiting for her. I knew that she'd find her way back to me one day. She did, just not the way that I imagined.

She called me when I least expected it, on the morning of my police academy graduation. The giddiness that I felt in my chest, instantly turned into dread. '' It's eight. The number of people that I killed. All eight are buried in the forest behind our house. Show them to the police and you'll get a good job right away. Happy graduation, little sister. I always knew that you'd make it big one day. ''

She hung up the call and I never got the chance to ask her if our parents were among the dead bodies that she buried behind our house, let alone thank her for the odd graduation present. In the end, I got to confirm that with my own eyes. I was there when the forensic team swept the dirt off the eighth skeleton and revealed my mother's rotting skull. Hyuk, the detective that would later become my partner, congratulated me for finding the bodies and the quick job promotion, while I was standing by his side and vomiting in the bushes. I got to join one of the most respectable and famous police stations in Seoul, but at what price? It took months before I stopped having nightmares about my mother's skeleton, laying on a bed of lilies, with worms crawling out of her eye sockets.

'' Hei, do you ever think about starting over and living a different life? ''

Hei was sitting behind the wheel of Mina's car, driving with one hand and balancing a box of Thai takeout food on his leg. His red hair was pinned back from his forehead by numerous bobby pins and he was struggling to eat and watch the road at the same time. Earlier, a steaming hot piece of broccoli fell onto his lap and we almost had an accident, but he still refused to wait and have his dinner when we would reach our destination. He wasn't about to let his food get cold just because I was worried about his driving skills. '' Sure. If I could, I would totally pack my bags, move to the middle of nowhere and become a potato farmer. ''

I turned my head and looked at him with surprise. '' Really? ''

'' No, '' he bluntly replied, rolled his eyes and took the can of cherry soda that I was holding in my hands. '' Don't fool yourself, detective. Life is not a fairytale. Not everyone gets a happy ending, even if they deserve it. There are also things that you can't outrun, no matter how far you go. ''
