My legs gave in as I saw the tree. Our tree. I crawled the next foot or so to it, and the relief of just being able to slump against the cold, hard bark was immense.
Squinting, I grabbed the end of my trouser leg and yanked it up. No time to be careful.
The blood had dried, but the teeth marks were just as deep as they were last night and just as raw. Pus was oozing from the cut. I knew what had happened. There was no going back.
I banged my head against the tree. A handful of leaves fell from the delicate branches, and I watched their slow, acrobatic descent onto the damp earth below.
I sat for a while, just thinking. Thinking about the fate that awaited me. I watched the sun set, and the sky slowly darken. I saw the stars appear and greeted them with an angry stare. And it was when I was gazing into the night sky when I heard a twig snap.
