song for this chapter- Crazy For This Girl by Evan and Jaron.

****

I wasn’t really paying attention to the people around me. I could see them moving, hurrying to get to where they had to be. Then there were the slower ones who walked along at their own pace, with all the time in the world. I could hear the noise of people talking, people walking, the rustle of plastic bags, cars in the parking lot. But I wasn’t paying attention to them. I was just here for some milk. That’s all I needed. Then I could leave and get back home.

The milk was located in a large fridge near the entrance, so it was easy to pick up. When I took it to the checkout, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I thought it was just a message but when it continued to vibrate I realised that someone was calling me. I took it out and checked the caller ID. ‘Ella’

"Hey Ell” I said, lifting the bag with milk from the counter and smiling to the cashier.

“Hey Perry, where are you?” she asked, just as I entered supermarket hell. After the checkouts, there was a big row filled with stalls, and the people on the stalls would bug you until you signed up for their product, took a leaflet, or acknowledged them in some way. The first person took my arm, trying to guide me over to read their posters.

“Hold on…” I said down the phone as I pulled away from the woman.

“Sorry, there’s people tryi-“I didn’t get to finish my sentence when another one took my arm, rambling on about giving to poor countries. I scowled at her and walked away, but that didn’t stop another five people doing the same to me. This was by far the worst thing about going shopping, especially on a Saturday. A woman thrust a clipboard with a sheet of paper in front of me, by this time I was really wound up. If I sign this silly scrap of paper they’ll leave me alone I thought, so I did just that. I signed it and almost ran the next few metres to the door. I put my phone back to my ear.

“Supermarket hell?” I heard Ella say, laughing. She can laugh; she can laugh all she wants because it’s never her that gets bothered.

But still, that’s our name for it. Supermarket hell. Which is quite self explanatory. Hell in a supermarket.

“Yeah, it was a fucking nightmare” I sighed. “Anyway, what’s up?”

“Just calling to see where you were at, are you busy later?”

“That’s me just walking home, I’ll be there in about 5 minutes. And no, I have no plans. Yet.”

Ella laughed. “I’ll see you when you get home”

“Bye babe,” I said, and she returned the goodbye before hanging up.

Ella and I shared a house. My friend Mike had introduced us to each other, and then we found out we would be attending the same college. Once we left college, we decided to house share, because it saved us a lot of money, and we didn’t want to lose the friendship we had built up. She’s my best friend, I can tell her anything.

“You took your time,” she said as I walked into the kitchen.

Typical Ella, always being sarcastic.

“I was getting milk for your cereal. We all know what you’re like. No milk and you throw a tantrum.”

Her expression turned into a shocked one, but then she started to giggle because she knew it was true.

“Anyway, Vic called. They’re all going to see a movie tonight, are you up for it?”

“Is it Star Wars?!” I jumped.
