We Come Spinning Out of Nothingness, Scattering Stars Like Dus

The night sky always fascinates me. How the celestial bodies above our heads dance from day into night. Never growing weary or tired. Never letting the ups and downs of life get to them.

They just keep moving.

They move on from one situation to the next. The sun sets to play with the stars. The moon rises in the black sky, shining, glowing. Radiating love and support to those who dwell in the dark hours.

The stars collapse and become black holes, swallowing existence as we know it? Keep going.

One of the moons collides into another sending newly formed asteroids and meteoroids flying in space? Keep going.

The planet’s turn and tilt out of line and cause a devastating domino effect. The universe around us, in a state of pure cataclysm? Keep going.

From the beginning of time to now, they continue to dance. Strangers to friends. Friends to lovers. Lovers to dearest. Dearest to devastation. Devastation to loneliness. Loneliness to the darkness. The space hidden between their beating hearts.

I’ve been keeping an eye on a specific speck of light. One speck in the universe out of millions. I can’t help but feel the gravitational pull. The undeniable lure. The siren song I can’t ignore.

No matter how many times I try to turn my back to the strange call, I cannot silence the cry. I cannot silence their cry. Whoever is on the other end. Whoever is crying out. Whoever wants to be loved.

I let my feet dangle off the side of my star. The only home I’ve known. A microscopic piece of dust in this expanding universe.

My silver skin glistens as Pegasus flies by. His golden hooves beating the dark matter around us. I rest my forehead upon his and he happily trots in place. He lets out a merry nay and playfully shakes his mane. I scratch behind his ear and his wings engulf us.

“No, not today. I’m looking for someone.” the beast stomps his hoof in disapproval. “Oh, don’t give me that. It’s important.” He nudges my bronze telescope, nearly causing it to tumble off the edge. “Hey! If it breaks you’re making me another one!” I wiggle my finger at him and he huffs. His wings spread out, mystic like the rings of Saturn.

I wave as he gallops away, soaring through the asteroid belt. Weaving in and out of the stones like he does every day.

I put the telescope to my eye. My heart suddenly starts to ache. I turn to the left, following the trail of stars to a lonely home.

A calico cat leaps from space rock to rock, tail stuck in the air. Their loving purr quakes my chest as they stop at the door and sit. To my surprise, the door opens. I lean in closer, hand clamping the end of the plank.

A boy shyly opens the door, his curly blond hair poking out. His smile shines like a thousand burning suns. The ache in my chest subsides, replaced with another sensation. One I can’t quite name. It isn’t excitement or joy. It is those, but stronger, more meaningful. More. Simply more.

I knew I wasn’t the only one here!

Without thinking, I leap into the chilly air and wave my arms. He kneels down to the cat and strokes its head. He wraps his arms around the cat and takes it inside. The door closes. The latch clicks. The space around me shrinks. The atmosphere begins to thin.

I pull my knees to my chest, heart barely pounding.

I close my eyes and call it a dream.

I didn’t see him.

I didn’t see him.

I couldn’t sleep. I continue to toss and turn on the lone mattress. My blue blanket was thrown onto the ground out of frustration. The scratchy fabric rubbing against my skin became a pest. I sit up and rub my tired eyes.
