Jayden walked out of the shower with his towel tied across his waist. His curly hair was dripping but he didn't bother doing anything about it. He walked into his room to get dressed up in some of his nicer clothes. He and Emily were going to visit his mom and she'd scowl him for dressing "badly", especially since they were having dinner at their aunt's right after.
Once his clean jeans and dark blue sweater were on, he took a moment to recognize that he was still alive and was very grateful for it. He tried to stay as low-key as possible because he knew what some people were capable of doing just for drugs. He only kept doing it because he was properly motivated.
"Em you ready?" he asked, coming down the stairs.
"Yeah hold on." she replied, not on her phone for once.
She grabbed her phone and her sketchbook then went to put her boots on. He grabbed his stuff too and they went out. Emily sat behind her brother, she never sat in the passenger's side. He knew it was because she wanted to use her phone the entire ride without hearing a word about it. He shook his head and drove off.
Having a parent in the hospital was tough as fuck, especially when the other left. And by left I mean literally picking up his bags to go find a bitch to fuck. Jay's jaw clenched and his grip on the steering wheel tightened, he remembered exactly the last time he saw his father.
He was eight and couldn't manage to find sleep. He went downstairs to get some water but heard his parents in the living room. He sat on a step and listened.
"I only fucked a black slut to have pretty babies! But you, ugly bitch, gave me little monsters!" he yelled at her.
"Stop yelling, please!" his mom asked crying "My job doesn't pay well, how will I take care of our kids?"
"Your kids. Because they're ugly like you! I gave you two chances and you failed, and on top of that you're cheating on me too!"
"I promise you he's just a colleague! Don't do this please!"
"Get your filthy hands off of me." he answered and left.
Jayden ran back up to his room crying.
He never told his mom he knew what really happened. She kept telling her kids that he was at work and sometimes even faked phone calls with him. Obviously now they figured it out, but it was never a discussion they had.
"You can now see Mrs.Parker" a nurse went up to them and informed.
The siblings nodded and followed her. They entered the hospital room where their mom was laying on the hospital bed. They rushed up to her impatiently
"Mom!" they both greeted and hugged her.
"Hey kids. How was school?" Mika asked in her usual tired voice.
"Great. I'm finally understanding algebra." Jayden announced, happy to see the pride and happiness in her beautiful brown eyes.
"How about you Emily?" she asked facing his sister.
"Fine." she bluntly answered as always.
"Hopefully very soon you'll be cured." Jayden said to try to cheer her up.
"God is with us." she answered caressing her children's faces.
"I made you a new drawing." Emily said handing her work to her mom.
It was a sketch of a queen, seated on her throne. She wore a huge shining dress with an enormous Afro and many jewels.
"It's beautiful baby. Go hang it up with the others."
As his sister went to hang her drawing on the wall, Jayden focused on his mother's features. Her skin looked a little pale, her cheeks were sunken in and her under eyes were dark and baggy. She still managed to look beautiful with the aid of her smiling plump, dark pink lips, and sparkling chocolate brown eyes. She was his motivation.
"I love you both so so much. You're really amazing kids, I couldn't ask for some any more beautiful." Mika said caressing Emily's hair and smiling at Jay "Thank you so much for taking care of me and trying your best to make me proud."
"Mom, you don't have to give us your speech every time." he said.
"But we'll never know when the last time will be."
The mood in the room shifted.
"Mom don't say that!" Emily whined.
"Mom you're a really strong woman, you'll live through this. You haven't seen either of us get married or even graduate."
"I know Jayden, I'm sorry." Mika smiled sadly then smirked "So, who found a lover yet?"
"Emily did; she's always on her phone."
"Jayden!" she exclaimed and pushed him off the hospital bed.
He laughed as he landed on the ground.
"Tell me baby, what's his name?"
"I didn't!" Emily groaned.
Emily didn't have anyone to tease her brother about because he was always bringing home different girls, and never spoke of anyone at all.
