One year. Exactly one year since Zack and Rachel escaped the building, and exactly one year since Zack turned himself in. Most people will think that being in nice institution with nice people, library, garden and a roof over you head is good, for Rachel, it was a nightmare. First 5 months she was scared. Scared of everything and everyone. Every day those 5 months, she tried to ask about Zack, and she always got the same answer...
"You don't have to be scared, he is in jail now."
That is exactly what made Rachel scared. Yes, Zack was incredibly strong, and yes he had incredible stamina, but there was only one thing worrying her: execution. If it was proven someone committed a serious crime like murder or multiple murders, death sentence was always the punishment. For some time, she wasn't stressing. She hasn't heard news about the Back Alley Murderer's execution until...
"You see, the murderer.... they sentenced him to death...."
Those words... those words broke her. The whole world around her was now gone. Now Rachel Gardner was really dead. She didn't exist anymore, not without Zack. After the time her therapist told her that, she didn't talk. She didn't have anything inside of her.
She couldn't stand ghosting him...
Yes, even if she thought suicide was the biggest sin, as her parents always taught her, she had suicidal thoughts. She even thought that hanging herself with bed sheets would be a great idea, maybe better than stabbing herself with Zack's knife.
But she didn't do it.
She had to trust Zack.
The day of Zack's execution finally came and that is when Rachel after such a long time cried again, completely alone. The tears started pouring furiously out of her eyes. She cried because she couldn't stand anymore. She couldn't stand those people not listening to a word she says and not caring about her, couldn't stand the nightmares she had, couldn't stand that their oath couldn't be fulfilled, but most importantly, she couldn't stand that it was basically her that caused Zack's execution. If he left her and didn't turn himself in, he would run away and live like he lived before.
But time can't be turn back.
It was already nighttime, and Rachel was alone yet again with the same dead look in her eyes, maybe even more dead than before. She closed her eyes and tried to sleep, when suddenly...
CRASH!!!
Sound of police sirens and glass shattering echoed through the room. Rachel shot her eyes open and stood on her legs to see the best sight she could ask for...
There was him, in all his glory standing on her broken window and holding his scythe. However, his hood wasn't on his head anymore so his face could be more open. God, he was handsome.
"Z-Zack..." Ray started feeling her tears.
"Hell yeah!" he said with a smile.
"B-but how... you were in prison!"
"Aren't those things made to be broke off?"
"Do you still remember our promise, because I still do!"
"How could I forget about it? Now come on Ray! We don't have much time!"
Zack held out his hand and Rachel hurried to take it. They jumped off a window and it seemed like eternity now.
"Zack... Kill me, please!" Ray said with tears flowing out of her eyes.
"If that's what you want, stop crying and smile."
There it was, she gave him the prettiest smile on the planet, at least to him.
But he couldn't do it.
"Crap this is going to hurt. Hold onto me!" Zack said as he pulled her closer while she hugged his neck in order not to cause too much damage. Rachel felt she fell, but there was Zack to soften the fall. That is going to hurt the next day. As Zack threw Rachel over his shoulder, they started to run. Police sirens could still be heard. Rachel never felt so happy, never felt so free, never felt so alive.
Again, she found herself alone with her thoughts, when Zack pulled her out of her trans.
"Well, guess we gotta find some place to stay, huh?"
"Maybe we could find some abandoned house and settle there."
"That's why yer' the brain." Zack said as he ruffled Rachel's hair.
No, it wasn't easy to find a house. It has been at least 2 hours since they started. They could've been faster but:
1. Rachel didn't have any shoes
2. They had to avoid all places where cops or anyone else could be.So after those two painful hours, they finally found old abandoned cabin.
Even though it was abandoned, it was in pretty good condition. There were two beds separated by one night stand.
"This could go. You stay here and I'm gonna go and find sum clothes, kay?"
"Be careful. If you remember, police is still looking for you."
"Nah, don't worry 'bout me. I know how to take care of myself, I'm a grown ass man! Go to sleep, you look like a fucking zombie." Zack said, and left.
Rachel wanted to wait for him, wanted to tell him how grateful she is for not forgetting her, wanted to tell everything she felt at this moment, but she decided to listen to him and lay down.
Again she found herself alone with her thoughts, but now she knew she wasn't completely alone. There was Zack. She was happy because she can be with him, to finally fulfill their oath.
Or perhaps, oath wasn't the true reason she wanted to be with him?
