Chapter 2:

Spikes of adrenaline coursed through my blood as I dialed Joey. He would know what to do next. My eyes constantly scanned my surroundings as I waited for him to pick up the phone.

"Hello?" a groggy voice answered.

"Joey! I need you to help me get out of the city. I made a terrible mistake," I whispered frantically. After a few moments of explanation, he was on his way.

There was still that "new car" aroma in his truck. I'm don't know the specific name for it because I don't pay attention to cars like that. Even with my limited knowledge, I still knew that it was pretty impressive. We hovered a few inches above the road, gliding effortlessly forward. Crystal-blue lakes and huge forests flew past us. The scenery was oddly settling as I was planning my next move. I noticed that Joey's teeth were gritted and his eyes were glued to the road. A sense of pity washed over me. Without warning, I had torn him from his life. He's risking everything he has by helping me.

His eyes flickered in my direction. Their brown colour is nothing special; however, I've known them my entire life. Just peering into them provides a veil of security and trust. For that split second, It felt like a hundred tiny butterflies were flapping to the beat of my heart. Little fireworks exploded in my head and my racing thoughts were momentarily interrupted.

I snuggled under a blanket as the car quickly came to a stop. "Present your chip," An oddly robotic voice greeted him. His chip stated that he was stable... unlike me. It allowed him to leave and enter the city anytime he pleased.

After a few seconds, we were back on the road. Everything went rather smoothly. At this point, I wasn't sure where I wanted to hide. The High Court could easily track my chip and take me into custody. I wasn't going to get far. As I came to this realization, I relayed it to Joey.

"What are we going to do now?" He sighed. After a few more minutes of driving, he pulled over to the side of the road. The sunlight streamed through the glass windows, striking his blonde hair in an almost magical way.

I hesitated. I knew what I had to do next. I was not going to let Joey be taken for helping me. "Joey, I'm so sorry." I quickly popped open the door and bolted into the forest. I could hear him quickly gain ground. He has always been faster than me. My surroundings became a green blur as I pushed myself to be quicker and quicker. I had nowhere to go, but I didn't care.

Suddenly, I was tackled to the ground. The dirt didn't provide much comfort under me as he whispered in my ear. "Don't. Do. That. Again." He managed to say between each breath. "I'm not letting you run away."

That statement seemed odd to me.
