My name is Adeline and I'm 24. I just moved to L.A. to start my job at Indigo, a top notch magazine that writes all the top stories in L.A. It's a big deal to have been selected as a journalist for them, but I am ready to take on the new challenge. It's a pretty high paying job so I decided to treat myself to a nice apartment and just finished unpacking all my stuff. I hear my phone ring and pull it out of my pocket to see who it is. It's my best friend Kate.
"Hey Kate, what's up!?"
"Adeline! How's your new apartment?"
"It's great! I just finished unpacking and I'm thinking about exploring a little bit. Maybe I'll take a walk on the beach."
"Ugh I am SO jealous! I want to live by a beach! When do you start your new job?"
"Tomorrow, so not much time to settle in."
"Are you nervous?"
"A little bit, I mean, this magazine is a pretty big deal around here. I could get to cover some really big stuff!"
"You are going to do great, Adeline! You are an amazing journalist and they are going to love you. Just don't forget me when you are rich and famous, okay!?"
"Oh goodness Kate, stop! I'm just a journalist, not a movie star."
"Yeah, but it's L.A.! You never know who you'll get to meet. Maybe you'll meet and fall in love with someone rich and famous!"
"Yeah, right! It's a good daydream though."
"Ughhh, I miss you!"
"I miss you too, Kate. I really wish you were here to experience all this with me."
"Me too, I'm sorry I didn't end up coming with."
"It's okay, you'll just have to visit me a lot!"
"Oh trust me, first chance I get, I'll be on a plane to L.A.!"
I laugh because I know she's telling the absolute truth. She has always wanted to get out of Arizona.
"Well, I've got some cleaning to get to, so I'm going to let you go. I love you, Kate."
"I love you too, Adeline. You better call me on Monday and tell me how your first day went!"
"You know I will."
"Alright, I'll talk to you later!"
"Bye, Kate."
I hang up and plop down on the couch, a little sad.
Kate has been my best friend since 3rd grade. She's always been there for me no matter what, like my own personal cheerleader. I honestly don't know how I am going to survive it here without her. She was supposed to move here with me. But then she got a job offer in Arizona that she just couldn't refuse and I moved by myself. Thank God for phones and video chatting.
I decide to take a walk on the beach to cheer myself up. The beach always puts me in a good mood.
I grab my keys, slip on my favorite pair of vans, and head out the door. I picked this apartment specifically because of its proximity to the beach. A quick half mile walk and I am there.
The soft breeze and the smell of the ocean air instantly makes me feel better. The beach has always held a special place in my heart. Childhood memories of vacations to the beach float into my mind and make me forget all about my worries of starting this new job.
I walk down the beach lost in my thoughts and memories with my head down looking for cool shells to collect. I really like the ones with purple and pink tones in them and cool swirls. They're just like the ones my mom and I used to collect.
