River

The bus moved in slow motion, the animals it contained waiting impatiently to arrive at the horrid compound they've been condemned to. Cain's Reformatory was where juvenile delinquents were sent to if Juvie refused to take them. Criminals lurked and demons roamed around freely. Cain's was referred to the Devils Lair by many.

My crime wasn't an innocent one, I was sent here for a reason. However, I was scared because even though my crimes are just as bad as these animals. I was much weaker than everyone else on this bus. I stand at 5'6 and I'm not dumb enough to think I wasn't going to be towered over once I arrived at Cain's. My frame was toned and I had muscles. However, my bus mates looked like they took steroids for meals.

We, the new inmates, were well aware of what happened to newbies the minute they stepped inside the walls of the Devil's Lair. As cruel as it sounded death was the only escape to avoid suffering. Guards didn't care what went on behind the brick walls of Cain's. They were only there to protect the teachers that tried to reform the animals that were caged up.

The bus comes to a screeching halt and I flinch at the harsh noise. The boys behind me started to stir with pent up excitement waiting to be released. Finally, they were at a place where they could lash out and not be punished even further. Cain's was a playground for the fat kid's bullies. Smirks, glares and a few terrified faces watch as a guard climbs onto the parked bus.

The guard was scrawny with a mop of a hairstyle. He looked new to Cain's and probably had no idea how to power structure actually worked just yet. He'd learn soon enough though. "Alright, sickos! You're going to exit off this bus in a single file and if I hear ONE word leave your disgusting mouths you'll be punished."

I anxiously stand up from my uncomfortable seat and file out silently with the rest of the boys. The Virgins, as we'd soon be called, stood in a straight line in front of Cain's Reformatory. It's large oak wood doors were closed, hiding the animals it caged behind it. I can physically feel the malice leaking out of the doors. The darkness holding its breath as it waits to wrap its claws around my throat and never let go. My eyes found the big stain glass window that over looked the front court yard. You could see what was happening behind the window if you looked hard enough. But I couldn't tell what the picture was, all I could tell it had a lot of red.

On top of the building stood a concrete cross, in mockery of god. There was no god in Cain's, only the devil ruled here.

I get control over my facial expression and wipe it clean of any sign of fear. 'You attract danger if they know you're afraid,' I whisper to myself.

The doors slowly open and the boy in front of me flinches back in surprise. The Virgins are marched forward, like lambs to the slaughter. As I get closer I see what lies ahead. Standing against the walls of the main hall were the delinquents of Cain's Reformatory in the flesh. I shiver back from all the intimidating glares I receive the second I step into Hell.

The vibe was straight evil and I couldn't help but feel like I was drowning in it. Almost gasping for air I try to distract myself by continuing walking forwards. Catcalls and death threats fill my pointed ears and I ignore them. The line comes to a stop and the voice of the guard from earlier gets my attention.

"Your room assignments are about to be announced, listen up or go without a room." The guard was yelling but no one was intimidated by a lamb wearing wolf's clothing. The guard starts reading off the list and the room immediately gets restless.

The feeling of eyes burning into the back of my head bugs me to no end. But as I look around for the culprit I find no one guilty. Everyone was either glaring at the guard or had their eyes closed. My attention gets snapped to the front when I hear my name get called.

"River room...203." The guard looked surprised as he read out the number before him. My stomach instantly twists into a knot. 'Why was he surprised? What's wrong with the room? Was it in need of repair or... is it my roommate?' I ask myself, biting my lip. My fingernails dig half-moons into my palm as I try to calm myself down. I'm sure it's nothing, he meant nothing with that look.

"200's go with guard Smith by those stairs over there" the lamb yells. I go to the staircase where I saw a bald guard waiting. I stepped outside the line and briskly walked over to the roundish man. I notice that only one other boy stepped out with me and keep my head up despite my confusion.

"You boys will be rooming with boys that have been here for a while." Guard Smith informs us as we climb up the stairs.

I glance at the smaller boy beside me and notice he's trembling as he walks. He sees me looking and shyly waves. I nod my head in return, offering a smile as I do.

"Try to keep your heads low and maybe you'll survive. Good luck, the demons will be released in two minutes." Smith warns once as soon as we reach the second floor. He hands us out separate keys while avoiding making eye contact. I open my mouth to ask a question but he's scurrying back down the stairs before I can ask it.

I run a hand through my hair and look down at the boy still next to me. He looked scared and he hasn't once stopped scratching at his exposed collar bone. I can see the red scratch marks and grimace slightly.

"What's your name?" I ask him, gently as I could do I didn't scare him.

"Kid" he whispers, his eyes awkwardly finding mine.

"Well Kid I'm River and there's no reason why we can't be friends right?" I ask, tilting my head to the side.

His doe-like eyes widen even more, "N-no there's no reason."

"What room are you in?" I ask, trying my best to not sound creepy.

"205."

"Great! I'll come to get you when it's time for dinner so we can eat together" I chirp, giving him a lopsided smile.

"Thank you" he whispers, giving me a small smile in return. I notice his hand as stopped scratching subconsciously which means I did my job.

I bid farewell until dinner and walk down the hall to find my room. I use the key the guard gave me to unlock it and let myself in. I quickly lock the door behind me as soon as I hear animalistic growls coming from down the hallway. I say a quick prayer that the kid made it to his room safely.

I push myself away from the door and look around the room before me. It was medium-sized, with high grayish colored walls. A black metal bunk bed was pressed against the left wall. The top bunk had its covers undone with clothes thrown about. While the bottom bunk was perfectly made and untouched. A desk was at the foot of the bunk bed and it was empty from any papers or even dust.

On the wall across from the bunk bed was a doorway without a door. The hinges were out so I knew it had been ripped off. I peeked inside and found a sink and a toilet. 'No private shower great' I think gingerly before going back to looking. The mirror was shattered but it was still attached to the wall behind it. I looked at a distorted picture of myself and cracked a forced smile.

There was only one window and it was right across from the door. Since it was uncovered it lets natural light stream into the room. I felt no need to turn on the light switch. As soon as you walked in you had a view of a small lake beside the prison. There was a tall chain-linked fence around the school's property. Like a promise to cage us even more than we already were.

I saw two wooden chests underneath the window. I squatted down and opened the unlocked one. Inside I find the clothes I had sent before coming to Cain's. A key to lock the chest tapped to the underside of the lid. And underneath the clothes were toiletries that I would need. I ripped the key off the chest before shutting and locking it.

I shove the chest key into my back pocket next to the room key before collapsing on my new bed.

I let out a sigh and drag my hands down my face as I scowl, "home sweet home."
