As per my request, we took the inexpensive, dingy airline. God knew Nana couldn't afford it, and the last thing I wanted to do was take money from my cold dead parents. So I opted for the inexpensive, dingy airline that satisfied my Chick-Fil-A cashier part time salary.
I assumed Heart Airways' unaccompanied minor policy must've been pretty austere, because every 20 minutes a stewardess would approach us and ask if we were alright. My sister would chose not to notice, quietly sipping her ginger ale and averting her gaze to her phone. I would muster all the politeness I could and tonelessly reply, "Yes, we're fine."
We'd be landing in frigid Everett, Massachusetts to live with our grandmother. And with any luck I'd remain until I moved out for college, and even then, I'd need to stay local to help out with my younger sister who often didn't know her right foot from her left, that, and Nana's job did not pay well. I knew I was going to have to make up for a lot, and mentally prepared myself to pick up the slack.
Our fight was extra-ordinary—save for Kani's quietness and compliance. I typically found myself having to entertain my little sister every half hour or so, but, she seemed to be pretty independent at that moment. Which was simultaneously soothing and terrifying.
When we landed, we were the last ones to exit the plane, per airline policy, which completely soiled my dignity, and we were escorted out by a middle aged woman looking tired and disinterested as fuck. I guess the 3 hours of turbulence-less flying really took a toll on her.
"Lei Lei, could you grab my luggage if you see it? I have to pee so bad." Kani whispered, clutching my sleeve, vibrating with unease.
I sighed. "Could you hold it? Or wait for Nana? I don't want to you to be in the bathroom all alone."
"I-I'll try, but it hurts so bad!" She whined, squeezing her eyes shut. Eyes closed in on us and I shrunk under the attention.
I grit my teeth and forced composure, digging my fingernails into the palm of my hand. "I understand, Kani, but you can't go alone; I need to come with you, but if I come with you, who would get our suitcases?"
Her mouth made what would've been an adorable 'o' shape, had it not been for my unwavering irritation.
"Ohhh! I get it. I'm sorry. I'll hold it!" She declared proudly, but still fastened herself to my side. That was probably the least irritating thing she'd done today. I didn't mind the clinginess.
The conveyer belt began its rotation, and by some strange sheer luck, our shared suitcase was among the first, but out of all our luggage, the heaviest.
I grunted, clenching the handle in my hands tightly, whilst flinging it onto the ground. As long as I got it off the stupid fucking belt, I wouldn't care if a broke a wheel or something.
I thought I might've had a sign taped to my back or something—it was starting to appear as though everyone and everything wanted to bother me today—when a voice, a guy, came from behind me, "Hey, you need help with that?"
I whipped my head around, arms still wound around the infuriating burgundy case, and got out as politely as I could, "Nope. No. I'm cool. Got everything under control."
The guy was roughly my age, cropped black hair, and sea green eyes; oh yeah. I could tell without certainty that he was a heartbreaker.
He grinned as I struggled under its weight. "You sure about that?"
"I mean, if you'd like to take it, then by all means, go ahead." I spat, shoving the stupid piece of shit at him. I wanted to hurt someone when I watched him grasp it with ease.
