Both Seth and Mark got three days out of school suspension. I knew it was only a matter of time before Seth paid me back. I didn't have to wait long. The day after he returned, he caught up to me. How he knew where to find me was a mystery. I constantly changed my route to keep that from happening. It was after third period. I was passing by the cafeteria when he grabbed me and shoved me into another janitor closet. I was starting to think he worked part time as a janitor here since the closets were supposed to be locked all the time. He caught me so off guard that I didn't have a chance to react.
I stood completely still in the dark closet. I waited to see if Seth would turn the light on. When that didn't happen, I stiffened. I had no idea what his plan for me was. In the dark I wouldn't be able to see whatever was coming. I brace myself. I felt his hand gently touch my cheek. I flinched. Then he ran his hand down my arm. I start to cry silent tears. The tears drip onto my arm and make their way to his hand. "Why are you crying Destiny." I don't answer him. "I'm not mad at you babe. I saw you turn Mark down. He's only pursuing you to piss me off," he informs me. I don't say anything.
He runs his hand up my arm. I hold my breath. "I miss you babe. When are you going to stop playing games and be my girl again." His lips come down on mine. I don't reciprocate nor do I stop him. I'm scared. I'll just let him kiss him me until he leaves. It takes everything in me to not push him away when he sticks his tongue in my mouth. I ignore the vomit that wants to come up and try my best to block this out. A bell ringing brings the nauseating kiss to an end. "That was nice babe," he says as he pulls away. "I know you enjoyed it. Just admit you miss me and let's forget this whole break thing."
I remain silent. "Let's go before we get in trouble," he tells me as he opens the door. The bright light causes me to blink. I close my eyes for several seconds and when I open them, Seth is gone. I sigh with relief. I don't tell Lucas about the incident in the closet. I hate keeping things from him, but I know it's for his own good. Seth is crazy. The last thing I want is Lucas in a coma thanks to Seth's anger issues. I'm somewhat relieved when Seth doesn't bother me for a couple weeks. Mark seems to have given up also.
MARCH 1982
I wake up today in a good mood. It's my birthday. I'm sixteen. Old enough to drive and get a job. I have an ear to ear grin. My mom and Faith are in the kitchen when I come downstairs. "Happy birthday sweetheart," she says as she puts a plate of chocolate chip pancakes on the table. I grin. She made my favorite. I know she will be late for work waiting on me. I hug her as I say, "Thank you mom." She kisses my cheek. "I got to run. Eat them before they get cold. Think about where you want to go to dinner tonight," she says as she heads out the door. I sit down next to Faith and we eat in silence.
We finish our breakfast and finish getting ready. I walk Faith down the street to the neighbor's house. Mrs. Dixon watches Faith until her bus comes later. "Happy birthday Destiny," Faith says as I turn to go. I smile and tell her "Thanks." I love Faith. Our age difference is tough though. We have nothing in common. We don't really interact much unless watching television together. I walk down the street to where I catch my bus. I'm the only high school kid on my street. It won't be long before I'm driving. I can't help but grin at that thought. Lucas will be driving to. I can't wait for all the dates we will have.
Second period I'm waiting for Lucas in the art room when he comes in holding a small box. He sets it down and gives me a kiss. "Happy birthday," he says. "It is now," I tell him as I pull him to me for another kiss. He wiggles out of me grasp. I pout. "We only have so much time for a birthday celebration. You'll have to save the making out for another time. I pout again. Lucas opens the small box and pulls out two birthday hats. The pointed kind with the elastic band. I giggle as he puts one on me. He puts the other one on himself and I laugh. I reach over to kiss him, but he stops me. "No making out," he reminds me. "It's my birthday and I want to make out with you Lucas," I pout.
