"Why do you keep him here if he hurts you?" I asked my mom. She shrugged and leaned back in her chair. "Because I love him." She whispered.
*Flashback over*

I walked through the back door of my house to find Thomas scavenging through our pantry. He had his back turned to me.

Thomas is my stepdad, and we despise each other. I don't know why Mom keeps him here.

I walked past him, and he turned around and smirked.

"Where are you going, little bitch?" He asked me, then laughed. I sighed and kept walking towards the stairs and up to my room.

As I passed my mom's room, I saw her putting makeup on under her eye. I dropped my backpack to the floor and ran up to her. Her left eye was black.

"Mom, what happened?" I asked frantically. She looked at me with a frown.

"You know what happened." She told me then put the makeup back in her drawer.

I turned and walked out of her room and into mine across the hallway.

I put my backpack next to my bed and closed my door.

I pulled my diary out from under my bed.

Dear diary,
I feel so sick. But it feels like I'm losing weight. Finally. Mom's eye was black again. Thomas must have punched her again. I hate him so much, and it's not doing anything good for mom. Today at school, Rachel and her group started talking about my dad again. She was saying how it was a good thing that he left me, that I don't deserve someone as good as him. I just want to get away from here. Why can't I get away from here?
Sincerely, Charlotte.

I closed my diary and hid it back under my bed. I then decided to start on some homework just to get it over with.

About an hour later I was finished, I sat on my bed listening to music through my school computer, since my mom is too poor to get me a phone, when I heard my name being called downstairs. It was Thomas. Ugh.

"Charlotte, we're going out to dinner," he called. I frowned and walked downstairs to meet my mom and Thomas.

I got into the backseat of the car while Thomas drove to a place called The Ugly Dog. The only reason Thomas was going there was so that he could get some beer. This is always his first pick when he gets to pick where we go.

Once we got there, we went inside and sat down. Thomas got a large beer, while mom and I got a lemonade.

"He's going to be so drunk after this," I whispered to Mom as I was sitting next to her in a booth. Mom nodded and turned her head to where I couldn't see her expression.

"What are you getting to eat, sweetheart?" Mom asked me. I wasn't planning on eating.

"I ate a big lunch at school, so I'm not that hungry," I told her.

Lie

"Char, you need to eat someth-" Mom was cut off by Thomas.

"If she doesn't want to eat, then it's less money that we have to spend, babe. It's ok." He said, trying to sound sincere. But I knew that was not what he was intending. But at least he wasn't going to make me eat.

Mom sighed, and the waitress came, and they ordered their food.

6 beers and 2 salads later, we were on our way back home. Once we got home, I went straight up to my room to get ready for bed since I have school tomorrow.

I got into pajamas and got under the covers. Mom walked in, gave me a kiss on the forehead and told me goodnight, then walked back out, leaving me to fall asleep.
