It was dark, there was nothing but me and the cold. My teeth chattered as I rubbed my forearms to create friction. There was complete darkness around me and the only thing I could see was my breath in front of me.
Coming.
Coming.
Coming.
I gasped and turned around sharply.
Coming.
Coming.
Coming.
I turned back around, trying to find the source of the voice. Then suddenly, in the pitch black I saw the outline of a snow white figure.
"Hello?" I called out to the figure.
The figure, a woman, turned around. She had thick, matted, long hair, black sunken eyes, and a gaunt body. Rags hugged her thin frame and her mouth opened wide. Suddenly a sharp powerful screech echoed throughout the darkness as the woman flew towards me faster than the speed of sound.
I shot out of my pile of blankets with a start. I gasped and yanked the blankets away from my body to cool down. I could feel sweat clinging to my skin and soaking my t-shirt. I glanced around the room wondering what the dream could mean. I licked my dry lips before taking a deep breath and standing from the blanket covered floors of the attic. I slowly trekked down the old steps making sure to dodge the last creaky step.
I swallowed as I entered my bedroom and glanced around the room. I felt a strange draft in the air that felt eerie. The cool air wrapped around my body as I tiptoed into my bed. Then I was out like a light.
---
My alarm blared and I rubbed the sleep from my eyes. Today was going to be a good day, but it didn't start as good as I'd like. The dream had my heart racing from the moment I opened my eyes. My dream still haunted me as I begrudgingly readied myself for the day. I pulled on a warm gray sweater and tugged on my ratty old blue jeans. I looked through my messy draw before pulling out a pair of old socks that look like they haven't seen the light of day in years. Pulling them on my feet I realized why, the big gaping hole right at my big toe would keep me out of them on a normal day. I glanced at the clock which read 7:28, I didn't have enough time.
So I tugged on my converse and bolted down the stairs. I cut through the kitchen picking up an apple from the fruit basket my mom kept filled and opened the door to the garage. I bit into the apple and the sweetness overtook my mouth and made me feel how hungry I really was. I got into my car and sped out of the garage. Speeding down the small town roads was easy enough, not getting caught was the harder part. However this early in the morning, the only people out were people who had to commute to Port Angeles for their jobs. I arrived at school at 7:35, way later than normal. The dream must've messed with my sense of time.
I grabbed my backpack from it's usual spot in the passenger seat and bolted towards the front entrance. I entered the building just in time for the first bell. The swarm of students headed to the classes was uncharted territory for me, usually I'm early enough to skip this. Awaiting at my locker was Edward, after seeing Jacob last night, it made me realize just how much bigger Edward was than me. He wasn't huge, but he certainly wasn't small either. He had toned arms beneath his dark maroon Henley and his long legs were snug in a pair of black jeans and expensive looking shoes adorned his feet. Edward noticed me immediately, and he smiled at me. I returned the gesture and approached my locker. I inputted the combination and shoveled everything in there. Retrieving my books and notebooks for my first hour class was easy.
"So," I said, closing my locker, "was there something you needed."
"No," Edward replied, falling into step beside me.
