Day of the Ball...
Mkhail woke me up earlier than usual, and that was because I had to make my portion of the desserts before I got ready for the Ball.
The determination that I had yesterday was still pumping through my veins-- that and two cups of coffee.
"Do you want me to help you?" Mikhail asked as I began to get things ready.
I shook my head. "No, but thanks, Mikhail. I'll be done before you come and get me to get ready for the Ball."
He nodded and bowed before he left to go somewhere, probably to wake up Prince Ivan next. Who really knows.
Well, not me at least.
I made coffee while I waited for the Ptichie Moloko to bake.
After I had my third cup of coffee, and the Ptichie Moloko was finished baking, I baked the Prague Cake, and then the Vatrushka.
Thankfully, the Prague Cake came out like it had yesterday. So there was no need to bake another, or the worry that I still had about it either.
"Okay," I let out a heavy breath as I put all three desserts in the refrigerator. "Now I can get ready!"
Just as I was about to exit the Kitchens, Mikhail had just entered.
"You're finished already?" He asked as we went back to my room.
I nodded. "And they all turned out perfect, especially the Prague Cake."
A faint smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. "I knew that you could do it."
"Yeah," I agreed.
Four maids were in my room waiting for me when we arrived. Apparentally, they were there to help me get ready.
Mikhail looked at his watch. "Please get her ready by six."
One of the maids nodded. However, one looked worried. Was that not enough time? I counted the hours that they had to help me get ready.
It was only three hours. The maids had only three hours to help me get ready for the Ball.
Huh, I guess I took just a little too much time to bake all three of those desserts.
No matter, the maids had me in a bath as one got my dress ready for me to wear to the Ball.
After the bath, I was whisked back into my room in just my bathrobe.
The other two maids both fixed my hair and makeup as the other two helped me into the many layers of the dress for tonight.
One of the maids that were helping me to get dressed got out a corset.
My eyes widened. "I-I-I have to wear a corset?!"
She nodded and gave me a sympathetic look.
"Have you not worn a corset before, Lady Kathleen?"
I shook my head. "It's the twenty-first century! Who would wear one now when they've invented bras?"
She smirked at what I had said.
"Most girls here wear corsets to shrink their waists." The other maid who was helping me to get dressed gestured for me to turn around, once the other two maids were finished with my hair and makeup.
Defeated, I turned around and the two helped me with the corset.
"Please don't make it tight." I begged as one of them began to tie up the laces in the back.
"I'll try my best." The maid said as she tightened the first bottom half.
I gasped as I held onto the edges of the vanity.
Why a corset? I thought in despair as the maid did her best to keep the wretched corset loose as much as possible.
Once I had the dress on, I felt like I was going to faint.
"Are you all right?" A maid asked as she helped me out my shoes on.
I nodded. I didn't dare to speak, in fear I might sound a little winded.
The one who had tightened the corset looked worried. "Maybe I tied the corset just a little too tight."
She was about to unzip my dress, but I stopped her with a wave of my hand.
"No, no," I breathed in some air. "The corsets fine." Like hell it isn't, but I didn't want to go through that again. Even if it was just to loosen it a little. I had a feeling I was just a little late for the Ball.
The maid nodded and led me out to the hallway, where Prince Ivan and Mikhail were waiting for me.
"Lady Kathleen is here now." Mikhail announced to Prince Ivan, who had his back turned to me.
"Finally, what took you so l--" Prince Ivan began, but stopped short when he turned around to face me.
I waited for him to finish his sentence, but all he did was just stared at me with wide eyes.
Feeling just a tad uncomfortable, I cleared my throat and asked, "Do you not like the dress?"
He shook his head and blinked several times before he replied, "No, that's not-- you look beautiful, Kathleen."
My heart skipped a beat and I felt my cheeks burn.
"T-T-Thank you," I stuttered as I absentmindedly tucked a loose strand of hair behind my left ear. "You don't look too bad yourself," I quickly added as I realized that his vest was matching with the color of my dress, which was a nice baby blue.
He smiled and gestured for me to take his arm.
"Shall we?" He said as we made our way to the Ballroom.
I nodded timidly.
