Warnings: Sadness and breakup ahead!
The italics are flashbacks
Tears streamed down your face. It was over just like that, two years of shared laughter and love like you had never felt before gone. What started as a small disagreement quickly turned ugly, things that shouldn't have been said thrown around, the words escaping your lips too easily. You went too far, he did too so here you were, bags in hand wandering the streets hoping to get to your best friend's place before it got too dark.
You lifted your head for a second, taking in your surroundings. You saw a bench out of the corner of your eye, your heart shattering even more than it already had as you approached the old wooden seat. Your legs giving in as soon as you reached it.
To many, it would have looked unimportant, just a plain old park bench. But not to you, this one simple thing meant so much to you. This was where you met him.
You sighed as you finally rested. You hadn't been running in a long time and you could definitely tell, your breath was short and your legs felt like jelly. You grabbed your water bottle out of your bag, taking a couple of sips. You saw someone out of the corner of your eye sitting at the other end of the bench, making you roll your eyes. Out of all the possible places he could sit, he chose to sit next to you.
"Hi, I'm Max" The guy smiled at you warmly. He was actually quite good looking, maybe you didn't mind him sitting there after all.
"Nice to meet you, Max, I'm Y/N" You answered, your smile matching his.
You talked for a while before Max leapt up after checking his phone, cursing under his breath about how he was late for work.
"I'm so sorry Y/N, I've got to go! I hope to see you again sometime!" He exclaimed before jogging away, disappearing out of sight.
Little did you know that moment would be the beginning of something beautiful, but of something you no longer had. You couldn't even remember what started the argument but you could remember what made you walk out. The sting left by his spiteful words had not yet died down. You didn't expect him to say those words but he did. The memory of his shrill voice as he screamed "I'm better off without you, just leave" echoing through your mind over and over.
You did see each other again after that. You found yourself going on runs more often in the hopes of your paths crossing again but that wasn't where you found each other. He was a lifeguard down at Bondi beach, something you discovered when your friend passed out on the promenade facing the shore.
You felt your phone buzz in your hand making you look down at the screen, a picture of him lighting up your screen. He was smiling with you in his arms, looking extremely proud of what he had achieved. In front of him was a cake that he had baked for your birthday as a surprise. The memory of that specific picture flooding back to you.
You unlocked the door to your shared apartment, pushing the door open with your foot, picking up the gifts you had placed on the floor moments before. Your friends had gone a bit crazy with presents this year.
You finally managed to get in, an incredible smell flooding through the hallway, becoming more and more prominent with every step you took.
"Max" You called out for your boyfriend, his head poking around the frame of the kitchen door, a cheeky smile taking over. He rushed over to you, lifting you up in his arms and kissing you lovingly on the lips before putting you down.
"Happy birthday beautiful!" He beamed. You hadn't seen him yet that day as he had the early shift.
"What have you been up to? What smells so good?" You questioned with wide eyes.
"I may or may not have made you a cake!"
That was for sure the best birthday you had, just being at his side made it perfect. You ignored the call, throwing your phone down out of anger, without thinking of the consequences.
You had been sat on the bench for a long time now but you just didn't have any energy left in you to get up and continue your journey. You decided to call someone to pick you up. However, that plan was cancelled as soon as you saw the state of the screen. The glass was shattered and you couldn't turn it on. Panic started rising in your throat, it seemed like you would have to stay on the bench until you could stand again.
~~~~~~
You were startled awake as someone shook your shoulder gently. You didn't intend to fall asleep but you were so tired from everything that had happened. You jumped away, trying to get away from the person. That's when you heard it, his voice.
"It's me Y/N... I'm sorry for what I said... Please come home"
A/N: Well I hope this was okay, I'm not sure what I think about this one :/
Stay safe and stay home during this crazy time everyone! My dm's are always open if you need anyone to talk to x
