My eyes basically bulged out of the sockets as the words left my mother's peachy lips.

"What? You mean, like, you already got it?" My mind was rushing with many different emotions, but the most recognizable ones were hurt, disappointment, and anger. They both nodded slowly, and I slapped my hand on the counter, causing their heads to turn.

"What do you mean?! You can't just..." I shook my head, looking down. I let my lips part and allowed the tears to flow from my hazel eyes.

"We had been planning it for weeks, and the date was today.." My father trailed off.

I flipped back my hair from in front of my eyes. "You mean..you had been planning this all along and you kept it from me?" My eyes darkened with a newfound rage. Before I knew it, I felt my mom's arms carress my torso and I tore them away from me, staring at her with pure hatred in my eyes.

"Don't touch me! I just...I need to think." I stormed off to my room, running away from the cries of my name from my parents. I sat in my room, locking my door and shutting myself away from the outside world. I didn't want to face the reality of my parents splitting. It was hard to see the two people that you  lived in perfect matrimony with split. I decided to take a nap, trying to cool down.

Sleep is good for the time that you're not awake. While you're sleeping, you don't think about how screwed up your life may be. But then, when you wake up, there it is again. Your screwed up life. Surprisingly, my parents didn't come knocking on my door, not even once. I'm glad they didn't. I'm not only frustruated with them not telling me, but the fact that it seems like divorcing was the first resort. They were sleeping in the same bed not even a month ago. Nothing seemed wrong, until everything came crashing down. That's the thing: you only realize the little details until after you see the big picture.

A light tap emerged on the door, and I knew it was my mom. If it was Dad, he probably wouldn't have even knocked.

"Hadley?"

I walked over to my door, unlocking the knob and swinging it open.

"Yes?"

My mom seemed nervous and frigid. "I...I wanted to talk to you."

"Well, shoot." I said, looking around my room as if I'd never seen it before.

My mom sighed, as my expression stayed as straight as a line.

"We're running low on money." My mom informed me and I stayed silent. She took that as a sign to keep going. "And I mean, really low. I don't even know if I can pay next month's water bill."

I was definitely confused. We never had this issue before, so why is she telling me this now?

"How is this just happening now?" I asked, a hint of rudeness in my tone.

"The divorce took hundreds of thousands of dollars out of my bank account, Had."

I squinted my eyes in disapproval. "Does this mean I have to use less water or something? If so, I get it." I said, grabbing the edge of my door, about to close it. My mother held it open.

"No, this means you have to get a job."

How does she expect me to get a job? Isn't the money situation something she has to deal with, not me? "I'm only fourteen, I doubt any place would hire me," I said, trying to talk her out of it. Maybe if I had enough reasons, she'd give up on the foolish idea.

"If you can't find yourself a job, then I will." With that, she closed my door, leaving. I plopped down on my bed, holding my hands over my head.

"Just close your eyes, the sun is going down. You'll be alright, no one can hurt you now. Come morning light, you and I'll be safe and sound."
