Seriously I try to concentrate but I can't keep my mind off of the fact that the enthusiasm Mick and Andrew were emanating just a few days ago was gone this afternoon. It felt like a totally different apartment: smaller and darker.
But, I don't know, maybe it isn't so bad. Maybe I am just seeing it that way because I am, in stark contrast to them, unbelievably happy. Things with Thomas are going well and ...
Fuck. I jump aside. That is the second package I drop tonight. For a moment I freeze then I look around, hoping my boss didn't hear it. Slowly I take the inventory list and look at what was inside the box. Relieved I breathe in. Nothing breakable.
From the shock more concentrated I start working again.
The music is blasting in my ears and I dance a little when I see something moving in the corner of my eye. I look over. My boss is standing at the end of the aisle and waves. I turn off the music and pull my ear pods from my ears. Letting the list at the place I walk over to my boss.
"Hey, there is someone who wants to see you. He says it is important", my boos says when I come closer.
I just nod and then follow him to the front of the store. He holds the door open for me and I step through.
Surprised I stop. What is Mick doing here?
I walk up to him. He notices me and runs up to me. His arms sling themself around my neck and his face disappears into my shoulder. It happened so fast I couldn't see his face but it is obvious he is upset.
"What's wrong Mick? Is the date already over?", I ask. To be honest I don't know the time. When I work here I always loose track of time. That's why I have an alarm extra for the end of my shift.
"She didn't show up", Mick whispers into my clothes. What? The time is still on my mind, I search my pockets for my phone. Damnit, I left it in at my desk.
I start going through his hair with my hand. I know he likes that.
"Did you call her or text her? Maybe there was an emergency", I try to calm him down but if he is so upset that he came here, that is not going to help.
"She didn't reply", he starts to sob.
If this was anyone else I would tell them to calm the fuck down. Overthinking never helped anyone. But it is Mick and Mick is my best friend. I know that this was his first date with someone he actually likes. This must be devastating for him.
I sense my emotion whirling up. Concern for Mick, a massive wave of anger directed at Ember, and if I am honest, a pinch of devilish happiness about the revenge I am planning on her. She is not messing with my best friend.
Carefully I push him away and turn around hoping my boss is still somewhere near. He is standing behind the counter and trying to seem like he is going through some papers. I can see that his concentration is on Mick and my conversation.
"Boss", I say to get his full attention. His head raises and he looks at me. "Can I take him to the back? I promise he won't touch anything." My boss just nods.
I pull Mick with me and sit him down at my desk. My phone is lying on a pile of paper and the light is blinking. I check it and see that Mick has tried to call me several times. Shit. Slowly I crouch down in front of him.
"So tell me what happened?"
"I've waited and she didn't show up. That's what happened."
What the fuck is someone supposed to reply to that? I don't know. But I don't have to because Mick is asking:
