Darius and Denise walked hand and hand. There was no destination, only the beautiful silence of night and the light of the full moon that shone on them from above. The couple had been walking this very same road for over one-hundred and twenty-seven years. The both of them died violently back in the late 1800's and still hadn't figured it out yet. They both still dawned the bullet holes that ended them on this very road. A repeating Winchester rifle did the job, and the job was carried out by Denise's Husband after he found out that his wife was having an affair. Denise's husband was supposed to be out of town for a few days but he changed his mind. He wanted to spend more time with his wife, he had been working in the mine's day and night and needed some family time.
Denise's husband James was heading home when he spotted his wife embracing Darius on the side of the road. The two were kissing one another right out in the open where anyone that passed could see them. Shock washed over him like a cold rain and then anger. He ran a half mile to his house, grabbed his rifle and then raced back to confront his unfaithful wife.
"So this is what you do while I'm at work killing myself sixteen hours a day!" James said through clenched teeth as he aimed his rifle in his wife's direction.
Darius and Denise jumped away from one another with their hands hands up as if they were getting arrested. They looked just as surprised as James did. Darius said,
"I know how this looks but just let me explain..." James cut him off in mid-sentence.
"Shut the hell up! I've seen all that I need to. One more word and I'll blow the top of your head clean off! How could you do this to us Denise?"
James's voice cracked and his eyes became watery when he said this. To his surprise, his wife's face had turned cold and her eyes showed no remorse. She said,
"Give me a break!" She said coldly. "How could you do this to me is more like it! You're never home and when you are it's to lay on me for two minutes and then pass out drunk!"
James stared at his wife in disbelief. His knees and hands shook uncontrollably as he took an unintentional step forward. He said,
"Say one more word and I'll blow your filthy two-timing ass away!"
Denise smiled at him and took hold of Darius's hand. Darius looked nervous but he still gripped her hand tightly. James's eyes narrowed.
"Go to hell James! Your not crazy enough to...."
A thunderous explosion echoed through the empty road that made something in the surrounding woods howl. Denise staggered backwards. She had just enough time to look down at her shredded chest before thumping to the ground. Darius screamed and rushed forward without thinking. Two more shots echoed through the night.
The first shot nearly tore the shirt off of Darius's chest, the second blew a hole in his gut that demolished his spinal cord. He was dead before he hit the ground.
James placed his rifle over his shoulder and marched home like a civil war vet, blocked from any emotion. He had plans to put the barrel of his Winchester in his mouth and end it all once he got home.
