Part 8: The Search Begins

Author's Note: This chapter has a crossover with two other books from two other authors!

The first two interactions are characters from "Geirmunder, the Drowning Past" by "Phagethemage" on Wattpad(not a fanfiction just pure fiction, the crossover is actually in his second book of the series not yet published)

The last and longest interaction are characters from "Let Me Be There For You" by "Technogirl123" on AO3(also a reader insert fanfiction, the crossover happens in the sequel to 'I'm Here For You' both of which are published)

Our walk to the clearing was long and nearly silent. I can feel this new power welling up within me, the longer we walk.

"So.."Marzia quietly begins, "You're going to use the same power from the fight on Subnautica? The one that left you unconscious for weeks?"

Duke decided to speak on my behalf, seeing my thoughts clouding my mind too much to properly explain.

"The power she unlocked within herself is extremely overwhelming if you don't know how to control it. Most people lose consciousness the first time. Not only does it remove her natural restraints, but it connects her to all other existing mutants giving her access to their abilities. Like any other power, it must be refined to prevent from hurting oneself or someone else. And since she had been so weakened before it even happened, the result was unsurprising. But I've trained the few mutants who have unlocked it in the last several generations, and am going to help her as she goes." The steady control in his voice has always been comforting.

When we finally arrived in the field, the sun was shinning down on us. The slight breeze cool and calming. We're it not for the dire situation, today would feel like a perfect day.

Duke and I turn to face away from the greenery around us, Seán turning to stand with us. He takes my right hand for comfort and encouragement as Mark and Amy move to stand behind us.

"Since I can hear auras and you can see them I'll try and translate what to look for. You're familiar with Chase's aura?"

I nod, as Venus pulls Sam and Beth to our left in order to not be in the way. Felix and Marzia moving to our right, mirroring them.

"I know you remember what I always told you, everything is connected by energy. Portals are much the same. Every location in time and space, every alternate universe, and every object or living thing has intertwining energy."

I focus in on his words, narrowing my vision until I only see and hear Duke.

"When a portal is opened, thousands of places in space and time, including a multitude of alternate universes, are folded together in the ring of energy. So when a person goes through, traces of their aura will be left behind in each of them. Understand?"

"So I need to find the ones Chase's aura is tangled in?"

"Exactly. But this could take a very long time, which is why the other council members are also working to find him in other ways."

Again I nod. He grunts in acknowledgement before closing his eyes.

"Focus your mind on pure energy. To me, they sound like rivers of sand, no larger than a small branch. Find the ones with his aura, take hold of one, and carefully release your energy into it until it forms a ring. This, will create a portal. Remember, if you lose focus the portal will close."

He looks back to me and smiles encouragingly, Seán gently squeezing my hand. As I ease my mind back into the world around me, I slowly build my focus of energy into my eyes. Amazingly, ribbons of particles almost like magnet shavings, appear all around me.
