We were up with the birds
the bastards
cawing, until we crawled out from the tent
It was late, when we'd got there
just enough time to sink a biscuit
and lay out our sleeping bags
but god, the sunrise was beautiful
red and oranges and pinks
stretching
dyeing the lake
You placed a bowl of porridge into my palm
and suddenly I was close to tears
I clawed them back
I dug in my spoon
just look at the sky
Later, under the pines
it was dark but still day
you slowed your steps to match mine
and I tried not to breathe you in
the reservoir was a blue beacon
and I kept my eyes on that
the winking
it was friendly, not mocking
Later again, after we sat drying on the shore
you were so quiet
and I couldn't help but think
did you wish I was someone else?
because I didn't
I didn't
The moon rose and you pointed it out
I smiled
it promised to stay there, as we got into our tents
I curled up
and I fell asleep, whispering to myself
I wish it was enough
I
wish
it
was
enough
