The bass was so loud I could feel it vibrating through me. I would have hell to pay for it tomorrow, but for tonight, it was electrifying. Suddenly something hit me between the legs and the next thing I knew I was swaying, two metres up in the air on the shoulders of my friend, Raj.

'Excuse me!' An angry voice shouted from below, 'get her off your shoulders! You can't do that in here.'

'But, sir,' Raj replied, mock politeness lacing his tone, 'it's her birthday!'

'I don't care if she's the damn Queen of Sheeba, get her down!'

Reluctantly, Raj plucked me off his shoulder and let me slide – a little slower than necessary – down the front of his body.

I hit him across the chest laughing, 'you perve! Why are you trying to get me kicked out on my first night of freedom?'

The bouncer was still watching our group, his arms folded across his chest and his eyebrows furrowed in disapproval.

Molly, one of my closest friends from my previous school, snatched my free arm. 'C'mon, girl, let's dance!' I was more than happy to oblige. The music and alcohol were both pumping through my body and all I wanted to do was let go to the rhythm. I grabbed Molly's hips and we started to move. I was so glad that Steph had thought to invite her tonight – Molly was one of my oldest friends, funny, smart, loyal and so much fun. She looked killer tonight in a tight black denim skirt and stripped crop top, her blonde hair down and wild. She let out a squeal as another of her 'favourite' songs came on and pulled me over to a little clearing, so we'd have more room to dance. The lustful eyes of several boys followed us.

I was giggling so hard at her outrageous dance moves, attracting more and more gazes to us. 'Molly, Molly,' I gasped, 'Stop! I need to pee.' I seized her arm and dragged her through the throngs of sweaty bodies, ignoring the disappointed looks from several guys as I took away their muse. We joined the long queue leading to the toilets.

'Oh my god,' giggled Molly, her words slurring slight as she swayed into my shoulder, 'is that that dead girl's brother? Damnnnn that boy is fiiiine.'

My eyes shot up so fast that my alcohol-riddled brain couldn't keep up and, for a second, I had double vision. His back was to us and he was standing with another guy, both their bodies leaning against the wall, but, unmistakably, there was Will. I felt a little electric shock run through me and I quickly returned my gaze to Molly, trying not show the effect his presence was having on me. Part of me really wanted to lock gazes with the abyss of those dark eyes, but another, bigger, part of me, didn't think I could cope with another of his scalding glares. Ignoring the sudden gallop my heart had taken off on, I pricked my ears – they were near enough that I could just make out what they were saying.

'Geez Oscar', Will sounded irritated, 'you could've warned me that we were coming to this bar. I'm all for taking my mind off things but I haven't been here since we were in school and this place is crawling with tweens.'

'Oh sorry, Mr Cambridge,' Laughed his friend, presumably Oscar, 'you know you're not the only one who left town for university right– this is the first time I'm clubbing in town too since school so it's kinda the only place I knew...' There was a pause before he added, in a more mischievous tone, 'besides, mate, it's easy pickings.'

I heard a thud and turned around to see Oscar rubbing his arm laughing as the two of them walked off. Will hadn't spotted me, but the guy called Oscar caught my eye and gave me a wink.
