You and Jethro had been friends for years, long before you both became lifeguards. From splashing around bubbles in bathtubs as babies to you both saving lives at Bondi beach, you had grown up together, learning all your water skills side by side. You were inseparable, where one was the other would follow. You found yourself catching feelings for him, feelings that surpassed the innocent bond of friendship. You were certain that these feelings were only one-sided, and revealing them would just end up hurting you both. However, you were wrong. Jethro also felt his heart race every time you walked in a room, a loving smile would tug at his lips when you laughed at your own jokes, he noticed all the little things that made you who you are and he loved every single one of them.

You were joking around the tower with Jake when the door opened.

"Look who it is!" You cheered as Jethro approached you, giving you a quick hug, nodding at Jake before taking a seat. "It's my favourite type of noodle!"

"For the last time Y/N, my hair does not look like ramen" He rolled his eyes, lightly smacking your arm.

"Not just ramen Jeff, it has to be instant" You corrected him, turning your head back to the beach, binoculars held up to your eyes. You didn't notice his gaze on you, his longing gaze that held so much love and affection. You also missed Jake's exaggerated eyebrow movements directed between Jethro and yourself. He knew about your feelings for each other, all the lifeguards did but no matter how much they pressed you both to ask the other out, you didn't.

Your shift went by quickly, spending most of the day by Jethro's side, joking around with each other but still staying professional, keeping your eyes on the water. The best shifts were the ones you had together, the ones where you would cheer the other on when you would have to do rescue after rescue, the ones where you would laugh together at all the weird and wonderful things that would happen around you.

Before you knew it, it was 4 pm, the time you were scheduled to leave as you had an early shift that day. You said your goodbyes to everyone and grabbed your stuff.

"Wish me luck Jeff!" You smiled nervously whilst hugging him briefly, his heart rushing as he held you.

"What for?" He asked once you had let go, but you were already gone.

You had a date that evening with a guy you had met online but to be honest it was more of a distraction from the feelings you had for your best friend than to actually find love. Your date, Adam, had asked you out for drinks and a quick meal that evening and you agreed, in the hopes that your strong feelings for your best friend would subside.

~~~~~~
It was now 7.30 and you made your way to the restaurant. You decided on wearing a floral wrap dress, your hair was loose and you completed the look with glowy looking make-up. It was definitely a change from the swim gear you spent most of your time in, but it was nice.
You saw Adam waiting outside for you and he smiled as you approached, greeting you with a light friendly hug
You saw Adam waiting outside for you and he smiled as you approached, greeting you with a light friendly hug. You walked in together chatting before you were stopped by a waitress.
"Food or drinks only?" She smiled at you, guiding you to a table and handing you menus after hearing your answer.
Jethro's POV
The boys and I made our way to get some drinks after a long last couple of hours. We had to perform rescue after rescue, for some reason people thought it would be a good idea to swim directly in front of dangerous current signs, even more than usual. So here we were, grabbing a couple of drinks together to wind down after that stressful day.
I laughed with the boys as they poked fun at Joel, taking a sip of beer. I lifted my eyes for a second, freezing instantly as I saw her. Y/N. She looked beautiful, but she looked beautiful for someone else tonight. She followed the waitress to a table alongside a man who looked about her age, she was on a date.
"Crikey is that Y/N?" Joel exclaimed, looking towards our coworker. The boys' looks changed from surprise to pity as they turned towards me. My usual bright blue eyes had a sudden dullness to them, all the joy I felt only five minutes prior had been washed away. My heart physically hurt, but it's my fault for not confessing how I felt towards her.
"I uh I'm gonna go..." I murmured, standing up and gathering my belongings. I went to exit the bar, tears clouding my vision, passing her table as I tried to zig-zag my way through the busy room. I heard a voice call my name but I didn't stop, I just kept going, my feet taking me all the way home.
~~~~~~ The next day~~~~~~

I sat in the tower, trying to stay focused on the water as much as possible and not think about Y/N on a date with someone else. I had spent the whole night debating the whole situation, do I say nothing and possibly regret it for the rest of my life? I had made a decision, I had to tell her.

She was currently stationed at backpackers whilst I was in the tower and I waited patiently for her to come up for her lunch break seeing as mine was at the same time as hers.

Your POV

You made your way to the tower in the buggy, smiling at the thought of food as you were starving. You were greeted at the top of the stairs by Jethro.

"C'mon, we're gonna get some food" He dragged your hand, pulling you after him.

You sat on a bench facing the beach, a tray of chips and your favourite sandwich serving as lunch.

"What's up with you today, you seem different..." You asked the blonde boy next to you.

"You were on a date last night..." He answered, looking at the crashing waves in the distance, not daring to look at you, twiddling his thumbs nervously. You were about to respond when he cut you off.

"And I realised something when I saw you, I realised that not telling you would be worse than living with the pain that comes with regret for the rest of my life. I- um- I like you Y/N, as more than a friend..." He finished before finally daring to shift his gaze towards you.

You started laughing, not believing the situation you were currently in.

"We're idiots, aren't we?" You smiled, shaking your head slightly out of disbelief.

"Of course we are, but why are you mentioning that now?" Jethro asked, confused.

"Because I like you too"
