"Wh... Huh?" Mimie awoke with a start, her ruby eyes springing open as they struggled to focus in the dim light. The room was suddenly illuminated by a flash of lightning, and she remembered where she was – At home, in bed, with Dash. His familiar scent soothed her senses. The sound of thunder rumbled in the distance, and her ears perked up to the sound of soft whining from outside the bedroom door. "Ugh..." The mare mumbled, burying her face into the pillow.
"Dash... Dashy...?" She nudged the stallion snoring softly by her side with her foot. "Get the... The dog. She scared," The mare muttered, her partner only snorting in response. The whining grew to a sharp yelp as lightning struck again, closer this time. The stallion's ears prickled as he jolted awake in surprise, throwing his leg over the side of the bed, prepared to flee. Mimie turned to view him over her shoulder, snickering softly to herself at the sight of his panicked expression and messy mane. "Relax, we're not being attacked. Just get Stella, she's outside," A yawn punctuated her command. "Huh? No, you get her," the stallion rebutted, falling back into the plush covers with a sigh. "You're the one who wanted her," he mumbled sleepily, wanting nothing more than to fall back into his slumber to the sound of rain pattering heavily against the glass windows.
"Babe," Mimie hissed in indignation. Stella barked outside the door upon hearing her voice. "Get the freakin' dog!" Pulling the sheets around her, she rolled over onto her side, taking the blankets with her. Chilled by the late night air, Dash found himself wearing nothing but his grey sweatpants and his own milky pelt. His coat bristled in the cold, and as he sat up, he looked down at the petite mare wrapped in his checkered duvet. Her candy colored hair fanned out across both his and her pillow, her eyelids pale without the shimmering dark pigment she usually wore during the day. After all this time, it still surprised him how different she looked without makeup, and he smiled softly to himself as he ran his fingers through her hair.
A shrill "Yip!" pulled the stallion out of his daze, and he lumbered lazily towards the bedroom door, reaching his arms out blindly in the dark to find the door handle.
At six months old, Stella had grown from a tiny puppy into a formidable adolescent Doberman. The moonlight cast a pale sheen against her shiny chocolate coat as the dog jumped up in glee to greet her owner. The silver tag on her collar jingled against several enamel charms Mimie had added to the strap. Carefully, Dash picked the dog up in his arms, all 55 pounds of her, and carried her towards the bed over his shoulder. "Here's your dog," The stallion mumbled, releasing Stella onto the mattress where she trampled excitedly over the sleeping mare. "Dash, what the f -!" Dash snickered to himself as he watched his girlfriend flailing her arms in an attempt to disentangle her hair from the dog's long limbs. "You dumbass!" The mare's voice was muffled as she covered her entire face and body with the blanket, rolling over to completely encapsulate herself.
Satisfied, Dash lowered himself onto the bed as Stella paced in a quick circle before making herself comfortable against Mimie's back. "Yeah, yeah. You got your dog, and you got your dumbass. No need to brag," he spoke against the blanket cocoon containing his irate lover. Draping an arm and a leg over her and their dog, he pulled them both closer, burying his face in the swathe of pink, vanilla-scented hair still covering his pillow.
