The walk to my place was pretty rough. My place. It's crazy for me to think I was gone for 5 years and I come back to the safe haven, the place we risked so much for.My new home was really nice the walk there not so much. My body, despite it being cared for in the best way posible, was not as strong as it used to be. I struggled going through the rough terrain to get to our destination. Brenda had to help me at certain time and we even took some breaks a long the way. What was supposed to be a four minute walk turned to fourteen, but we made it.
According to Brenda Newt had this house built for me when I started to stabilize a while back. It took him a couple months and it has been waiting for me ever since. The house was built on a small hill I could see the beach from the front part of it.
The outside of it was beautiful. It was a two story building, with decorative wood on the exterior, and a wrap around porch. Inside was an amazing living area, with a place to cook and a bathroom right across it. There was some stairs that led up to my bedroom but with me being weak I couldn't go up to see it.
Brenda went up for me and got me set of new clothes and waited for me to wash up for tonight.
After I showered which was something I missed the feeling of I changed into my new clothes which was slightly big on me. I looked at myself in the mirror. I definitely lost weight you can easily see it in my face. I have some stubble on my jawline which was new to me. It seems like everyone involved in taking care of me did a pretty good job. I sighed heavily as I place my hands on the sides of the sink. I looked at myself and tried to force myself to remember as much as I could.
I had memories of the Scorch come back to me. I remembered Minho being kidnapped and us trying to save him some how with people who's faces I didn't recognize. Then I remembered her again. Teresa. The last thing I could remember about her was us in the mountains.
Then in an instant the scenes of me being dragged across the scorch and being tortured by her were replaced by me and her in a building. There were people surrounding us, the building was burning, and she was staring right at me.
"Thomas?"
Hearing Brenda's voice snapped me back to reality. "You know it's a gathering outside you don't have to dress up too much."
"I know! I'm sorry I'm coming." I told her as I splashed some water on my face. I wiped the cool water with a rag before looking at myself one last time. "One day at a time Thomas." I whispered as I tried to shake off my emotions.
I opened the door and grabbed my can before I managed to walk towards Brenda who was sitting on a chair by a window. She glanced over to me and smiled. "It's about time you finished. Are you good to go?"
"I guess I am." I started to walk out with her. It was more of a wobble.
We walked in silence for a bit until she started to point stuff out. "So this path leads straight to the beach. The path behind you house leads to a trial we made around the forest. It's one of my favorite places to go. You know I think you're really going to love it here."
Brenda kept showing me around to make sure I wasn't confused or disoriented. As much as I appreciated it I had one thing on my mind right now.
"Brenda can I ask you something?" I said as I stopped walking.
She stopped walking as well and turned to face me. "Anything." She told me.
"Teresa. Where is she?" I asked carefully.
Ever since I can remember the topic of Teresa was always a touchy one, with well everyone. I knew with Brenda it would be just a bit more.
She looked down at the ground and shook her head. "I honestly hoped you weren't going to ask me about her. How much do you remember about her?"
"I can't remember much after her calling Wicked on the Red Arm camp. It's just I feel like I've seen all of my friends and she's been the only one that I haven't seen. Not to mention no one has talked about her either."
As I told her these things I studied her face carefully trying to see if she was telling me the truth. I had a bad feeling in my stomach start to build up.
She sighed before speaking up. "Look Thomas I think this is something we should discuss later."
She tried to walk away but I grabbed her arm before she was out of my reach.
"No Brenda please don't avoid the question I just need to know if she's here." I found myself begging for a sense of closure."She's not here." She told me bluntly.
Hearing those words didn't help how I was feeling at all. A part of me felt at peace and the other hurt. No matter what she did to me Teresa was my closest friend at one point of my life for a long time. I tried to think past the memories I had to draw up some sort of picture of what happened to her. I couldn't believe she wasn't here.
"What happened to her?" I asked.
Before she could speak a voice called out both of our names. It was Vince as he walked on the trail towards us.
"There you guys are. Try and hurry up everyone is waiting for you both."
I looked at Brenda and as if she read my mind she said "We can talk more about it after dinner. I promise."
That was all I needed to hear before walking towards the beach.
