Month One

It all started five months ago. Everyone knew there would be another lost soul joining us and although many were nonchalant about it I couldn't help but feel excited. The day started normally, well what we orphans would consider normal. Waking up at seven every morning to Mom Hazel's wrath was a norm. Breakfast consisted of the usual PB&Jsandwich and a glass of water. Cleaning duties were assigned to all of us and mine were the dishes. Don't get me wrong but cleaning the dishes for more than twenty people was the worst job for a sixteen-year-old. Mom Hazel told us about an hour ago that we'll be expecting another sister.

We all had our suspicions since for the past week we had to spring clean the whole building and an extra bed was added right next to mine. She was brought here in a fancy car accompanied by the sweetest lady. She wore skinny jeans with a black hoody covering most of her face. You could tell she was beautiful from a mile away. She had the physique of a Vogue model, all in all, one could say that I had formed a crush on her. Mom Hazel introduced her as Aliya Black and one could say that the boys were practically drooling over her. When told no hats allowed in the hostel the kind lady now known as MsAbrams pulled mom Hazel aside and told her that Aliya never removed the hoodie from her head and under no circumstances was she advised to try and remove it herself.

I dared to be the first one to introduce myself to her and although I expected her to say a simple "Hey" she just smiled at me in return. After many attempts I got her to speak to me and in a few weeks, we became close friends. I don't see why Mom Hazel brought another bed in the room if Aliya was always wrapped in my arms. I never complained because if she never fell asleep in my arms, then everyone would be awakened by her heart clenching screams. Ever since she asked to sleep next to me she hasn't had one nightmare. It's been three weeks since she arrived and I can't wrap my head around the fact that she trusts me enough to be comfortable around me. The first time I saw her without the hoodie was when I came into the room to have some alone time. e hostel tends to get extremely loud at times and I just needed a rest.

I don't think I'll ever forget the smile on her face when she laid on the bed reading a book. Her auburn hair had a natural glow and her eyes shone brighter than the stars and although one would say she had dull hazel eyes no one would know the glow in them when she looked at boring old me. She beckoned me over to join her on the bed and I laid on her thighs without question as she continued reading while her fingers ran through my dark brown hair. We spent hours conversing about everything one could think of. We shared our most embarrassing moments, our weirdest traits, our most treasured memories, our darkest secrets and how no one understood us. We shared our first kiss that day in the room. She tasted like the cherry lip balm she used.
