6 MONTHS TO THE PRESENT DAY...
[ CHARLOTTE's POV ]
I can't tell Henry that it does feel like Ray's replacing us. I can't do that to him. Not since it took him ages to face the fact he could never be Kid Danger ever again - that that part of his life was officially over forever. It does feel like a bit of him died that night along with his former alias, and I don't really want to push him further towards his breaking point. What can you tell someone that's dedicated his life for 6 years to one cause? And now all that's gone, what are you supposed to do? It's not like you can go back even if you really want to...
No I can't do that, I can't even do that to myself let alone to him.
Of course, I miss it. Of course, I'm sad, it was part of my life just as much. Maybe not as overwhelming important but still the central point of it. I had dedicated my entire teenager years to helping and doing good and now it did feel like we were leaving it all behind. That's why I had suggested originally to the group that we focus on spreading good in another way from behind the scenes - fighting corruptness by helping charities' or organisations instead. It weren't action packed but it still did good, so naturally the boys took some persuading.
I laid back into my bed fumbling through our many applications letters we were going to send out, because of course none of us was prepared enough to choose somewhere before we actually came. And just as annoyingly typical the boys had decided I was the perfect one who should choose where we would go, so that I got all the blame if it was bad, while they do shit all in their rooms. There was of course the classic charities but I couldn't choose something that they would then get bored over really quickly. They needed something unique, something that made leaving our lives behind fully worth doing, especially after seeing the newest news report.
Fuck, why did my mind have to cast back to the news report? Focus Charlotte focus!
I glance to my inbox of my email as a notification catches my eye - The T.R.U.T.H. . Curious, I click on it to be greeted with a formerly written email addressing these applications that I never even sent. But apparently they want to give us a job, which gives me defiente red flags but I somehow push these feelings aside. Maybe I'm overreacting.
'Dear Ms C Page, it has come to our attention that -'
Sup Char,' Henry wanders into the room mindlessly clearly wanting to talk. And I know what he wants to talk about and right now I just can't.
'Henry, did you apply to this charity called The T.R.U.T.H without me knowing?' I skim through the email avoiding his eye contact, 'Fighting injustice and corruption from the backseat. It sounds as if they are trying to find a drug that solve crimes.' I pause intaking what I just read. That's exactly what we needed and it's really impressive. I mean really impressive. Fighting crime with no risk, no violence, it sounds great. No it sounds perfect! Henry puts his hands in his pocket, shuffling awkwardly clearly not as excited about the idea as I am.
'I don't know Char, we've always done crime fighting by you know actually fighting. If we're going to focus on it like that then why can't we fight like old times?'
'Because some problems don't need a violent solution - and if this company thinks they can solve crime through science then I say we give it a shot.' His gaze drops to the ground instantly as I carry on, 'Look we should try it out and if it doesn't work we could leave. But we need to find somewhere soon cause it's been two months and if not we've come here for nothing! And Ray's spending money won't last forever.'
That was stupid to bring up. As soon as I said it I knew it shouldn't have, that was too soon. He nods solemnly and slides back out the room. Boys, they never like the obvious answer even if it is the one they need. They just never want to hear it. But someone does need to remind him that we can't carry on fighting like that - we aren't superheroes. And after Drex, I don't think I want to fight face on ever again.
