Lake swung his legs back and fourth as he sat at the front counter, watching his best friend work in his quiet, quaint little Boba café. Maybe it was the aging pink and cream wallpaper, or maybe it was the sweet smell of sugar and fruity flavourings that came from beyond the counter, or maybe even the fact that Kye was with him, but Lake always felt calm when he was there as he sat on his little cushioned pink stool, right beside the counter.
He observed the steady flow of people heading out. It only made sense that people would leave, it was starting to get dark, and it was almost closing time, anyway. After a few minutes, everyone was gone. The silence was peaceful, enjoyable, after the noisiness of college life eating away at him.
Lake lazily laid his head down on the counter, nestling his round face into his arms. He smiled to himself, then felt a light tap on the top of his head. He looked up dazedly, and was met with big, dark eyes; so dark, they could've been all pupil. The velvety voice that owned the eyes said "Are you really gonna wait until I'm off work to go back home?" Kye said, smirking slightly.
Lake sat upright, and said, smiling "Of course I am! I mean, our apartments are only right beside each other, and it would be rude to leave you on your own with no one to talk to. You would get all lonely without me." Lake laughed at his own comment.
"Shut up, boke. Oh yeah, I forgot to say earlier, I have to close this place down today, permanently. I'll be starting work in a sweet shop nearby; hopefully I'll get some more profits, compared to this old place. I think I'm gonna miss it." Kye said, patting one of the walls.
Lake looked longingly around the little café and said in response "Yeah, I'll miss it too; but if it makes you more money if you leave this place, then I guess you have to." He got off the pink cushioned stool and walked around the quiet, calming building that he would have to say goodbye to, brushing his hand against the old pink and cream wallpaper, admiring the few paintings of pink and yellow flowers and leaning against the dark wooden tables.
He picked up a small, slightly wilted rose that was in one of the petit glass vases on one of the rosewood tables, and placed it in the front pocket of Kye's apron. "Well, we have to tidy up all the stuff here if we're moving out today, right?" Lake said, smiling and tilting his head.
A light blush dusted Kye's cheeks, and scratching the back of his neck, he said "... Actually, we're just closing down today. We have up to a week to move everything out. Would you still like to help me, though?" Kye smiled.
"Definitely! Hey, what if we get this place ready to rent out to someone else early in the week, so we can hang out at the weekend? We could go to the arcade, or the park, or the bowling alley, or... you know what that's all that I can think of right now. So, what do you say?" Lake said, looking as though he was trying to mimic a puppy.
"Sure, as soon as we're done with this place." Kye grinned, ruffling Lake's pink hair. "Do you want to call it a day today, though? I don't know about you, but working long hours in a stuffy little building tires the heck out of you."
"Sure! Let's head back to the apartments!" lake replied, smiling as he walked towards the wooden pink door. He turned the silver handle with a light click, opening the wide door. As Kye was walking out, he flipped the little sign that said "We're open! Come in!" to "Sorry, we're closed!" Then lightly shut the door.
They both walked towards their separate apartments, the lowering sun shining their path. It was making their shadows seem long and tall, causing Lake to slightly giggle. Kye smiled at the smaller boy's innocent amusement, and in no time at all, they finally made it home.
