new year's eve was special, and cooper didn't care at all.

he woke up to the sound of his ringing alarm, and groggily turned over to his side to switch it off. he laid in bed for a while, rubbing his eyes and checking twitter, and soon got up to shower.

he was always careful when he left his room - he didn't want any of the boys to catch him off guard. he still interacted with them occasionally, but it's been several months since they all had dinner together.

cooper brushed his teeth, washed his hair, and chose some proper clothing for the day. it was chilly, so instead of a hoodie he went for a t-shirt and a track suit jacket on top, paired with some grey joggers and socks. it felt nice to have more spacious clothing and dress a little better than he usually would for when he was at home, even though there wasn't anything special in his plans that day. he wanted to feel good.

he plopped into his gaming chair and started up his computer. knowing it would take long, cooper decided on getting some breakfast to bring up to his room in the meantime. just as he was about to go downstairs, he noticed a pile of folded papers peeking out of his slightly opened desk drawer. he pauses his movements and takes them out. he unfolds them, and notices the numerous letters he wrote for (y/n). with a sigh, he arranges them in order of the dates, and staples their top left corners together. soon enough, he took out the box of the stash of her things, and took another hard glance at each piece of paper before placing them inside, and put the box away. with a deep breath, he straightened himself out, zipping up his jacket, and went out.

the boys heard when cooper's door opened. they texted between themselves, picking on the fact that for cooper this was an early time to leave his room, and decided against going downstairs with him. instead, they messaged the bigger group chat that they had with a few other creators, as well as some shared friends, and awaited a response.

it was nearly 7 p.m., and the house was unusually quiet for december 24th. everybody knew the reason, but nobody wanted to fix it, necessarily.

it wasn't long before the sound started up again, though.

"cooper! could you possibly help me with something?" carson's booming voice travelled through the house. he sounded concerned - a good actor - and cooper had no choice but to sigh, and get up from his chair. he ran his hand through his hair, and unzipped his jacket before coming downstairs.

cooper was making his way down, a suspicious silence building up each time he went down a stair, and right as he was about to step foot into the darkness of the living room, the lights instantly turned on and shouting filled the atmosphere.

"surprise!", followed by howling was all that could be heard from the several tens of people occupying the living room. the blond boy's eyes didn't know where to look as they scattered around the area, noticing the balloon, posters, and printed pictures holding up cursed photos of cooper and his friends.

he stared at the group in front of. all of lunch club was there - hell, nearly all of the players on the smplive server were - and lots of friends of friends, like grace, amanda, madi, sam, griffin, and countless more.

"hey buddy," carson croaks out with a shy smile after seeing cooper's widened eyes and frozen stance, and the group's chattering came to a halt. him and the rest stood a few meters apart, and there was no reasonable way for cooper to react other than to shoot a joking inquiry at carson in hopes to ease the tension in the room.

"is this what you needed help with?" he allows himself to smile at his own response, the corners of his lips turning up a little more with each second that passes, and with that, everybody lunged at cooper, engulfing him into a life-threateningly inclusive hug.

they all ate take out together, playing games and watching movies until early hours of the morning, chatting the entire night away. cooper's never been this shocked or happy, and nothing struck his heart strings more than the actions that noah, travis, and carson decided to pull through with that evening. nothing could compete with the beaming smile cooper had plastered on for the rest of the night, receiving small gifts and hugs all around. he got a new skateboard from griffin, one he wanted for a while, and a fresh new bong from sam. he laughed when he got it, and thanked everybody for doing what they did. he opened up a little about everything that's been going on out of respect, as well as apologizing for being a hermit as well.

the remainder of the days leading up to the new year were spent with company, and cooper only went into his room to sleep, and instantly hopped out the next morning to rush downstairs to eat breakfast with those that decided to stay the night. he was laughing all the time, filled with endless joy when surrounded by the right people, but at the end of the day, he always thanked the single person that brought him the most happiness in life.

"thank you, (y/n)," cooper whispered to the ceiling, cuddling a navy blue jumper he couldn't help but retrieve from the box. he wiped a stray tear that managed to escape his left eye, and breathed out a simple, bittersweet laugh. his heart still ached for her, but he knew that it wouldn't last forever. nothing ever does.

"i couldn't save you, but you surely saved me."
