"Go get the door, Janet! Your cousin is here!"

I rolled my eyes at the Mad Cow and opened the door. My cousin\best friend Delainie McKay stood, fiddling with her cigarette lighter. "Hey! How are you?"

Delainie mumbled something about hiding from someone and brushed past me. I risked asking Sigmund, my male parent, about why she was acting so closed off. He sighed and said, "I can't tell you that, Janet. If you listened to us when we told about why she was coming, you would know."

Nan arrived in time for lunch, and I bloody swear, she almost had a heart attack when she saw Delainie. Nan blathered something about the Devil's spawn and sat down. What Delainie was doing interested me more than the conversation at the table, and she was building something out of magnets.

My mate David arrived eventually, so me, him and Delainie went up into my room. We exchanged gifts (I gave David a picture frame and Delainie a purple coffee mug with a black raven painted on it and the word "Nevermore" in blood red script under it. She loved it).  Delainie handed me a small box. It was cardboard, and had a poem written on the under side of the lid.

"I wait, blank. The plank blocks me from you. Paint peels away, to reveal a change. Wow, Delainie. This is amazing. You do this for fun?"

Delainie's face went pink as she said, "I-I had a lot of time on my hands for a few years."

I took her gift out the box. It was a piece of wood crudely carved to look like a J. It was painted dark magenta. "I love it! Did you make this?"

                       "Mmhm. Here, David."

David unwrapped his gift. It was a dark green notebook. Only one page had writing in it, and it said, "I love you" over and over again. Delainie snatched the notebook back and ripped out that page before handing it back to David. She got up and rushed towards the bathroom. "...Does that happen often?"

I shrugged. "This is new to me. Last time I saw her, she was in kindergarten and setting Hot Topic on fire." (If you get this, you have my blessing)

"Huh. Whatever, what did you want to talk about?"

                       "I don't remember."

"Tell me about your cousin please."
