Chapter 3: Flicker of a Flame

My eyes shot open at the howl of Grace in my head. Get your tiny ass over here, it's training time girl! I pulled on a pair of jeans as I stumbled to my bathroom. Half of my hair was flatened against my head while the other half was all over the place in mats and friz. I ran a brush through my slight curls and looked at the rings under my eyes.

The event late last night had given me nightmares whenever I did manage to fall into a fitful slumber. My eyes were tired and rimmed with unreached sleep, but I knew that Grace and the others were counting in me to be there.

Hopefully Marcie won't be there. I thought as I pulled on a sweater over my tank top. Maybe she forgot all about Brant is sleeping with some other wolf right now. I brushed my teeth and slipped into my shoes as I trotted down the stairs as I passed my mother.

She was shifting through the newspaper as she looked up and smiled. "Good morning honey." She said as she trapped me in a hug. "You're up pretty early aren't you?" Her perfume that dad had gotten her had laid dormant on her dresser ever since his death a few years back, and she hadn't touched makeup in months.

I looked at my mother as she returned to her newspaper and leaned up against the railing. She was a beautiful woman and at one point she was the pack jewel. I had always wished I had looked like my mother, but I was short and slim, unlike my tall and curvy mother.

"Yeah mom, Alpha Redforce has us training in front of SilverFang." I said as I went to the kitchen to grab some breakfast. "You know, the dragon heir?" I finished as I stuffed  a bagel in my mouth.

My mother followed me into the kitchen and sat down at the counter, placing her legs neatly over one another. "Oh I heard something about him from Silince this morning. He's watching you guys train, isn't he?" She was flipping through the thick pages as she pulled her blonde hair in their long strands. Swallowing the bagel in one last gulp, I turned to my mom as I headed for the door. "Yeah, I guess so."

"I love you!" She called as I shut the door behind me. I didn't bother phasing because of the closeness of the training grounds. My boots made soft thuds as I half-jogged to the large clearing where most of the eighteen years were gathered. Grace turned when she saw Raychel wave in my direction and started to make her way towards me when Alpha Redforce growled and she slunk back obediently to her father.

Alpha Redforce was standing beside his beta and SilverFang giving out instructions as I joined the group. The fangs that were flashed when I arrived were hostile and threatening. Laza, you better lie low, my dad's crazy strict about our training since SilverFang got here. Grace shot to me through the pack mind link.

Great, the first time anyone from the High Court comes to our pack, and I'm the one to give us a bad name. I sighed, showing my alpha my throat. My inner wolf was growling at the way SilverFang was looking at me, like I was doing this for a laugh. I looked at my alpha as he further explained our training for today.

"We'll start with some one-on-one sparring, then work on our takedowns, and end with a special event that was designed by our very own SilverFang." He said, motioning to the dragon heir. Everyone nodded as they understood their directions given to them by their leader, and headed to where the sparring would begin.

SilverFang took a seat on some sitting stones with Silince and a few other members in the pack who came to watch the youth spar. Gernixx lined us all up in a line while Redforce chose who would fight who.

I had been happy when I hadn't seen Marcie with the others, but my happiness faded when I saw her join the elders who were gathering to watch this show of power Redforce was putting on for SilverFang. I wasn't quite paying attention when Redforce was picking partners for the fight, but I heard Grace moan when I heard my name being called.
